Media Components

A SMIL presentation consists of a set of component files. The SMIL file is the "container" for all of these files, just as an HTML file contains the references to all of its component parts (for example, images, other Web pages, and so forth).

The following chart lists the various types of clips you might include. It also lists typical dimensions (where appropriate) and bandwidths for these types of media, which will be useful when you start to work on the presentation layout and timing:

Type Description Dimensions Bandwidth
animation Animation clips such as a Flash Player file (.swf). varies
audio Audio clips such as RealAudio (.rm) or MP3 (.mp3) n/a 34kbps - 64kbps
img JPEG (.jpg), GIF (.gif), or PNG images (.png) Can be served from Web server or Real server.

banners are typically 580 - 600 pixels wide (standard Web page width)

12kbps
text Static text clips (.txt). Must be served from Web server. varies less than 1kbps
video Video or other clips that display continuous motion, such as RealVideo (.rm).

160 x 120
240 x 180
320 x 240

150kbps - 256kbps
