Subscribing to Feeds

To view news feeds, you must first install or sign up for a news aggregator or similar application. Once you have installed a news aggregator, you can subscribe to news feeds by visiting sites that offer them and following these steps:

  1. On the page containing the news to which you want to subscribe, find the the orange RSS button (on sites outside the BU Web, the button may be labeled "XML"):

  2. Click the RSS button. An RSS page is displayed:

  3. Add the RSS feed to your news aggregator by one of the following methods:
    • Drag the RSS button onto your news aggregator, or
    • Drag the URL from your browser's address bar onto your news aggregator, or
    • Copy and paste the URL into your news aggregator.

Note: The subscription process is different for every news aggregator. Consult your aggregator's documentation for more information.

Unformatted XML

Sometimes when you visit a page containing a news feed and click the RSS button, unformatted XML markup is displayed in your browser:

On the BU Web, most news feeds are formatted so that when the XML file is displayed in a browser, the content is readable and includes RSS instructions. Many news feeds outside of the BU Web are not formatted, so they appear as plain XML in your browser. The process for adding them to your news aggregator, however, is the same: Drag or copy and paste the feed's URL into your aggregator.
