Guidelines for Selecting Keywords

  1. For sites on www.bu.edu, you should view the Search Words section of your Site Statistics report to find which keywords people most frequently use to reach your site. Note: when a user searches for a phrase, such as summer school, the two words are listed separately in the report.

  2. You should select keywords and phrases that are specific and relevant to your site. Avoid general words, such as class, school, department, or program, unless used as part of a phrase.

  3. Use lowercase characters only, as keywords and phrases are not case-sensitive.

  4. For Quick Link keywords and phrases, a match occurs when a user types a keyword or phrase exactly as defined in a Quick Link. For example, a search on internship will not match a Quick Link of internships. So include common variations on a word, if that is important.

  5. You can select up to five keywords or phrases.

  6. For each keyword or phrase you select, conduct a search to find out how your site currently ranks in search results.
  7.
