Embedding Overview
Embedding the news in your site is one way to incorporate news content and provide you visitors with relevant articles as they come out. Once you form the code required to embed the news in your site, as will be demonstrated in the following pages, your task will be finished. Once correctly incorporated, the News Release System will continue to incorporate up-to-date news content based on the parameters you selected without additionally work or maintenance on your part. The page is dynamically generated each and every time a visitor views your site, so your site will never fall behind in presenting the most recent news releases.
Embedding, very simply, is incorporating an application, which is part of the News Releases' Content Management System, into the HTML code of any number of pages on your site, that dynamically generates the HTML code to display news content.
This method of incorporating news content in your site carries with it several advantages:
- Selection of News Content: You do not have to serve all the most recent news releases in the system, but you also have the ability to serve specific sets of the news. This includes selecting by school or college, displaying only the releases relevant to your school, selecting by category, displaying those releases relating to a a topic.
- Automatically Generated Lists: The embedded news releases are displayed as lists of titles with a hyperlink to the article. Clicking on the link automatically display the article with the look and feel of your school or college's pages by using your templates. Your visitor will not only be able to easily browse these releases, but will see the article in the design of your site.
- Customizable Number of Articles: You may not want or have the room to display all the relevant articles from your school or college on the page you are embedding the news content, so the script that performs this function can be told how many titles and links to display in the given space.
- Customizable Display Locations: You can embed the script virtually anywhere on a page: within the body of the page, a cell inside a table, or even inside a sidebar on your pages. This flexibility is one of the most important features of this method of serving news content, since you do not have to have a dedicated page for news. You can put it in section of your main page or in a section of an announcements page of your site. The possibilities are endless.
However, embedding has several disadvantages in relation to the other method of serving news content, linking:
- Limits in the Selection of Releases: Embedded news content does not have the ability to select news releases by a given keyword or sets of keywords, unlike linking to news content. Also, the news releases are always the most recent releases pertaining to whatever selector your specify. You cannot select articles from a specific date or year.
- Displays a Portion of Relevant Articles: Although it is in many cases an advantage to select a small set of the newest, relevant releases, this method is may not be able to display all the releases. Embedding can only display a maximum of 50 of the newest releases, so if there are more than this in the system, the older titles and links will not be shown. Linking to the news can and will by default display all relevant releases in chronological order.
