What is streaming Flash video?
Streaming video differs from video for download in that it is
viewed while it is being delivered over a network and is not saved to the user's computer. It allows the user to start watching right away after requesting the video and to jump forward to any point with little or no playback delay. Flash video is just one of several streaming video formats.
Introduced in 2004, streaming Flash video is relatively new compared to traditional Flash "movies" which utilize downloading to play back in a Web browser. (Flash movies are usually interactive animation, but sometimes incorporate short video clips). Both use the same popular Flash Player browser plugin. Most video formats that can be streamed can also be downloaded to the desktop, but streaming Flash video can only be streamed.
Streaming Flash video must be served from a Flash Media Server, not a standard Web server. However, you can publish your streaming Flash videos to your site on www.bu.edu, provided you first request that we register your video directory. In fact, you can publish the Web pages that display those videos on any Web server on the BU network as long as you request that we register your server with the Flash Media Server and keep your Flash video files in a www.bu.edu A/V directory.
