Intelligent Navigation Bar

In this chapter I will demonstrate the intelligent nav bar; a nav bar that displays differently according to its position within the structure of a Web site. It finds its own position via a JavaScript routine and sets the appropriate image to its down state.

Examples

Let's look at a few examples:

Parking Services
A good example for the intelligent nav bar. The down state sets itself automatically by evaluationg the location of the HTML document within the site tree. Intelligent nav bars require a clearly defined structure that is logical and defined before the site is build.

School of Law
This is an example of a complicated navigational system that is not based upon the intelligent nav bar. When the site was built the intelligent nav bar was not available yet. The site grew fast and adding a few navigational items created a major work project.

Law Library
This site uses nested intelligent bars which display not only the main navigation but also the sub-navs.
