Eraser tool

The eraser tools actually removes pixels and replaces them according to the settings in the tool option portion of the properties inspector.

As you see there are similar controls to change the size and softness to the eraser as there were for the rubber stamp tool.
In addition to that you can also select the basic shape of the eraser tool, round or rectangular.

A few thoughts about stacking

Although bitmaps are flat they can be stacked with other objects. If you have these distinct objects - may they be vector objects or bitmaps - you can use the eraser tool to make the objects in the background appear. This is a nice way to blend different bitmaps and still have them as distinct objects.

HANDS ON:
As we go along, please play around with the various tools. Use the rubber stamp tool to clean up some imperfections in the image of the flower or manipulate it with the other bitmap tools.
