The panels

Altogether there are 17 different panels that can be displayed. The panels are organized in panel groups that can be docked to the left or right side of the workspace. You can also turn panels or panel groups into floating windows.

Overview

Docked Panel GroupsTo the right you can see what the docked panel groups look like. Each panel group has a panel gripper area which you can use to move the group to another location.
The title bar states the name of the panel group and features an indicator that shows if a panel group is open or closed.

Open PanelWhen the triangle points down the panel group is maximized. Open panel groups also feature a context menu that gives you additional options for the specific panel as well as options to rearrange panel groups, or create your own.

The workspace is framed by docking areas. the vertical docking areas on the right and left of the workspace can hold any of the panel groups that open vertically e.g., the tools panel. The only panel that cannot be docked vertically is the properties inspector.

Context MenuYou can rearrange panels through the context menu and choose to move the panel into another group. After playing around with the panels you might end up in a complete disarray of unrelated items.
Macromedia supplied standard panel layout settings and allows you also to save your personal settings. You can access these settings through the Command menu in the menu bar.

HANDS-ON:
Start Fireworks and identify all elements of the interface that we just discussed so far. Open and close panels, move panel groups, apply a default panel layout.
