Templates: Hands-On
- Open an existing page from your practice site and choose File
> Save as Template.
- Define the editable regions of your page. These will include
a headline area, a subhead area, and a content area (the bulk
of your text content on the page).
- Save your template (File > Save) and close it.
- Create a new document from the template you just created (File
> New > Templates tab). When you have created the new document,
note what areas of the page you are permitted to edit (editable
regions) and what areas are not accessible (locked regions).
- Make editing changes to your new page and save (File > Save
As).
- Open an existing, unformatted page on your site. Apply your
new template to this page. Note the available editable regions
for your new template and specify what editable regions will contain
the information on your page.
- Open your template for editing. Add a clickable hot spot (image
map) to the page banner linking to the BU home page.
- Save your template. Note that Dreamweaver asks you if you would
like all pages based on this template updated. Allow Dreamweaver
to update your pages for you.
- Open one of your templated pages to confirm that Dreamweaver
has indeed updated the templated areas on the page without affecting
any of your content areas.
