File Check In/Out
For sites that have several content providers, Dreamweaver
also features a Check In/Out system. Using this Check In/Out system
allows you to manage your files so more than one person is not working
on the same page at the same time.
Go into your Site Definition box and select the "Remote
Info" category and turn on the checkbox to enable the file
Check In/Out system. Or if you know you are going to use the File
Check In/Out feature when you first establish your site definition,
turn on the option then. Note that everyone on your Web development
team must enable this function within Dreamweaver on their own individual
computers.
While enabling the Check In/Out system, type your
name and e-mail address in the indicated fields. This will allow
you to contact someone (via e-mail) directly within Dreamweaver
if there is a problem or a question with a file that is currently
checked out.
Once the Check In/Out feature is enabled, you will
see a few changes to the list of files in your site management window.
At the top of the window, two new icons will appear: a check out
box (on the left) and a check in box (on the right).
Your site management window will also show icons next
to the file names. These icons indicate if a file is checked in
(lock) or checked out (check mark). Additionally, there is a column
in the site management window (scroll all the way to the right)
to indicate the name and e-mail address of anyone who currently
is working on a file if it is checked out.

With Check In/Out enabled, you now Check Out a
file instead of Opening it. This will place an indicator on
your site that the file has been checked out. If someone else tries
to open a file that is checked out, they will receive a warning
indicating that the file is checked out and a message indicating
who has checked out the file.
When you are done editing the file, you simply Check
In the file instead of Putting it on the server. This will remove
the icon indicating the file has been checked out and will allow
other users to check out the file without receiving any alerts.
Please note that the Check In/Out feature is not a
true file management system. This feature in Dreamweaver will not
prevent someone from opening a file that is checked out. They will
receive a warning before doing so, but a user can choose to override
the warning and open a file anyway. The Check In/Out system is simply
designed to alert other users when a file is "checked out"
without the need for a content management system, most of which
must installed on the server and oftentimes costing thousands of
dollars.
