Renaming files and folders

Occasionally, you'll need to rename web pages, folders, graphics, or other files in your site. In most cases, there will be one or more pages that link to the file you're renaming (or to files in a folder you're renaming), and these links will break if they aren't updated to use the new name.

Fortunately, Dreamweaver's site cache keeps track of all of these links, and if you use Dreamweaver to do the renaming, it will prompt you about updating these links automatically. This feature saves you a lot of time, but remember that renaming web files outside of Dreamweaver will cause Dreamweaver's site cache to be out of synch with your site.

Renaming with Dreamweaver is easy - as usual, there are several possible approaches. You can start renaming by:

  1. highlighting the file and then selecting File > Rename from the menu of Dreamweaver's Site window.
  2. highlighting the file and then pressing the F2 key on Windows machines
  3. right-clicking (click and hold for a Mac) on a file icon in Dreamweaver's Site window to reveal the Rename option.
  4. clicking twice slowly on the filename itself (in most cases, depending on your operating system).
