Administrator password

The administrator password is unique to a Contribute site and must be used by the administrator to access the admin panel and set permissions, create groups, generate connection keys, etc.

Site administrators can change the password used by the administrator. To change the password:

  1. Acess the administration panel
  2. Click the Sitewide Settings button
  3. Click the Change Password button
  4. Enter your current password and the new password you want to use in the text boxes. You must enter the new password twice to confirm that you are entering it correctly.
  5. Click OK.

What happens if you forget the administrator password?

If you forget the password assigned to the Contribute web site administrator, you can reset the password by deleting the shared settings file from the web site and creating a new shared settings file. Note: If you delete the shared settings file, all of the group permissions you have previously created are lost; you must set up those permissions again. Because of this it is extremely important to keep track of the administrator password and use this option only as a LAST RESORT.

To delete the shared settings file:

  1. Connect to the web server using an FTP client. Note: You can’t perform this procedure from within Contribute, Dreamweaver, or a web browser.
  2. On the web server, open the root folder of your Contribute web site, then the _mm folder that’s inside the root folder.
  3. The shared settings file is an XML file (named contribute.xml) in the _mm folder.
  4. Delete the shared settings file.
  5. Using Contribute, select Edit > My Connection and select the web site whose shared settings file you deleted, and click Edit.
  6. Verify the Connection Wizard settings. When you are prompted to become the administrator for the web site, select Yes, and enter a new admin password.
  7. Enter and confirm the new password and click OK.
  8. When you have redefined the web site connection, you will be asked if you want to administer the web site. Click Done or proceed to administer the web site.

If problems persist:

  1. On the web server, reopen the root folder of your Contribute website. Then, select and delete the folder _mm. This will purge all Contribute settings and allow Contribute to be set up from scratch.
