Exporting a key
There are two steps to exporting a Connection Key.
First, you must decide if the key will be sent via e-mail or saved
to your local computer/network. As long as you do not include your
BU login name and Kerberos password, sending the key via e-mail
to a bu.edu e-mail address is safe and will generally be the recommended
procedure.
Saving the Connection Key to your local machine (or a network
drive) would allow you to share the Connection key over a local
network or save
and
distribute
your Connection Keys via floppy disk (the connection key will easily
fit on a floppy disk).

The final part of the key export process is encryption of the
Connection Key. Here, you should use a unique password or pass
phrase. Do not use your own password.
The password or pass phrase you use must be communicated to the
end user so they can enter the password/phrase in order to decrypt
and install the connection key.
Let's look at an example:
- You create a connection key for a new
content provider.
- You export it to send the key via e-mail.
- You choose the pass phrase "BU wins Beanpot"
- You finish the connection key wizard and send the connection
key via an e-mail attachment.
- You must convey the pass phrase "BU wins Beanpot"
to your content provider. You should NOT send the pass phrase
with the connection key. Communicate the pass phrase in person,
via a telephone message, or a written message.
