Examples of Digital Audio and Video
Audio and video can be served via the Web for a wide range of purposes. Whether
you are just starting to consider the possibilities of using these media on
your Web site, or have definite plans in mind, it's helpful to see what others
on campus are doing.
Course Content and Resources
Brief audio or video clips can be integrated with conventional course materials
to provide additional learning. For example, the Geddes Language Center has
an extensive library of sign
language examples online. The BU Police Department has produced demonstrations
of its RAD program.
Distance Learning
Taking the use of online audio and video a step farther, entire courses can
be delivered as digital media. Instructors in the College
of Engineering , Metropolitan
College, and School
of Public Health have begun work on distance learning projects that incorporate
video lectures as well as other course materials.
Special Events
The audience for lectures, ceremonies, and conferences can be widened by putting
a digitized video or audio version of the event online. In this
way, many people who may have been interested in participating but
whose schedules or locations did not permit them to attend can have
a chance to do so. Some examples include: Commencement,
and the School of Management lecture
series.
Promotional Materials
Many departments and schools have produced video overviews of their programs,
which have generally been distributed via videotape. Digital video on the Web
offers an alternative- see for example Office
of Admissions, Office
of Government and Community Affairs, School
of Hospitality Administration, and School
of Social Work.
Entertainment
Arts, sports, and music all can be delivered by digital audio or video. One
of the longest-running projects of this type on campus is WTBU,
the student radio station that has been webcasting its programming since 1999.
