MX Versions of Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash

(Posted on WebCentral on September 16, 2002.)

Campus Web Developers,

Earlier this summer, Macromedia announced major new versions of Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash. They are:

Dreamweaver MX
Fireworks MX
Flash MX

Boston University has recently completed its discussions with Macromedia to purchase upgrade copies of these products for campus web developers. We plan to send an announcement to developers the week of September 16.

Departments, faculty, and staff who have purchased earlier versions of Dreamweaver, Fireworks, or Flash through our site license program will be able to upgrade to the MX versions of those products at a reduced cost.

The price for upgrading is as follows:

  • $38 per license for any product (does not include price of CD).
  • $15 per copy of CD.
  • So, that's $53 per license and CD.

A department that needs to purchase a large number of licenses can save money by purchasing only 1 or 2 CDs to be shared among its staff. For example, a department with 20 Dreamweaver users can purchase 20 licenses, 2 CDs, and save the cost of 18 CDs ($270).

Once you decide to upgrade to MX, you should do it department wide. For example, there are features in Dreamweaver MX that make it incompatible with earlier versions. So, managing a site with Dreamweaver MX and Dreamweaver 4.0 is a bad idea. It will cause problems.

Networked Information Services now uses MX for all sites we develop. We will also begin teaching the MX versions of these products in our training classes this fall. And our support will focus primarily on MX.

I encourage all web developers and content providers to upgrade to these new versions when they become available. I will send an announcement when it's time to order.
