Boston to Dakar:  WARA 2013 STUDY TOUR

The West African Research Association (WARA) is pleased to announce a new program of study tours in Senegal for those who are curious to learn more about contemporary West Africa. The 2013 WARA Study Tour will take place during the first and second weeks of February—a perfect time to take a break from the winterscape of Boston.  It will be based at the West African Research Center and will include trips to points of particular interest.

The West African Research Center (WARC), WARA’s overseas research center, is located in Dakar, Senegal. WARC is a vibrant center of intellectual and cultural activity. In addition to its facilities, which include a fully-equipped research library, seminar/conference space with state-of-the-art technology, and a café; and its rich program of lectures, seminars, and film screenings; WARC has significant experience organizing and coordinating study tours for students, faculty, and other groups from the US and other parts of Africa.

WARA is pleased to be able to extend this opportunity to non-researchers and looks forward to introducing Boston to the rich and vibrant culture of Senegal.  This tour will include lectures by prominent Senegalese scholars, artists, and activists. There will be introductions to various aspects of Senegal and West Africa more generally—history, culture, politics, religion, economy, the arts.  We will meet with Senegalese public figures, visit institutions, and tourist attractions. The program will include lectures by university professors on a number of subjects and a meet and greet with local leaders.

The cost of this two-week tour is $3,000. Lodging, two meals a day, entrance to museums, transportation, lectures, guides, etc.); participants are responsible for their own airfare, as well as medical insurance coverage.
The deadline for signing up is November 1, 2012. Please contact Stephanie Guirand at guirands@bu.edu.
