USC Spring Drop-ins (January through April)

This spring, the USC will be hosting monthly drop-ins starting in January 2012.  Join the USC staff and your fellow first gen students for refreshments and good conversation.  One lucky attendee at each drop-in will receive a $10 gift card, too.  The next drop-in of the semester will be held on Thursday, February 23 from 5 – 6 p.m. at the USC; RSVP using the form at the right.  Dates for the March and April drop-ins will be announced soon.  Hope you can join us!  

First-Gen Study Breaks (May)     

Back by popular demand, we’ll be sponsoring Finals Study Breaks in May.  Contact Graduate Assistant Stephanie Burke at uscgradi@bu.edu if you’d like to help plan this event. 

Welcome Receptions for First Gen Students and their Families

The welcoming of incoming students and their families by current Terriers is one of the best things about our summer first gen welcome receptions.  If you will be around campus for some or all of the summer, we hope you can join us in welcoming our newest group of first gen Terriers.  Look for more details later this spring.

Ongoing                                  Howard Thurman Center Book Club  Now in its 4th year, the HTC Book Club is a family of bookworms who meet weekly to discuss culturally themed and socially conscious books.  The best part is…we provide the books for free.

 Feb. 15 from 4-5 p.m.             Test Preparation/Managing Test Anxiety (CAS 201)  Do you have a system in place for preparing for tests?  Discussion points will include time management, study skills, and managing stress.  Register here.

 Feb. 16 from 3-4 p.m.             Pressure Points (GSU 315)  Come to this discussion and learn how your body and mind react to stressful situations and how to reframe your outlook on managing stress.   Register here.

 Feb. 16 at 8:30 p.m.                BU for Show at BU Central (GSU lower level)  BU’s premiere open mic night.  Come see some of BU’s most talented student singers, comics, and magicians!  Signups start at 8 p.m.

 Feb. 17 from 4-5:30 p.m.        Avoiding Plagiarism and Citing Correctly (GSU 315)  For many, university courses are the first time that students encounter citations and references.  What is plagiarism?  How do we best avoid it?  When do we cite?  How do we cite correctly?  Based on BU’s policies on plagiarism, this workshop will answer these questions—and more—that you may have about proper citations and plagiarism.

 Feb. 17 at 9 p.m.                     LIVE: George Watsky at BU Central (GSU lower level)  Internationally acclaimed Bay-area slam poet George Watsky will blow your mind in BU Central’s first LIVE: poetry event!  Doors open at 8:30 p.m.

 Feb. 18                                    Back Bay Ball at The Westin Copley  Come dance the night away with your friends at the Back Bay Ball!  Tickets are $20/person for groups of 8 or more, $25/person for individual tickets, and $30/person at the door.  Questions, please contact the Programming Council at bupc@bu.edu.

 Feb. 18 from 7-9 p.m.             The 7th Annual Hope Show at BU Tsai Performance Center (685 Comm. Ave.)  BU China Care and BU aKDPhi will be hosting The 7th Annual Hope Show, which is an annual cultural freestyle charity show to raise money and awareness for special needs Chinese orphans to receive necessary medical treatment through the China Care Foundation.  16 performers will grace the Tsai stage ranging from hip hop dance performances, k-pop songs, Chinese yo-yo in the dark, some Irish step dancing, and more!  Tickets will be sold at the GSU Link from Feb. 6-10 and 13-17 and at the door on Feb. 18th starting at 6p.m.  $8 in advance, $10 at the door.

 Feb. 18 at 9 p.m.                     Speak for Yourself at BU Central (GSU lower level)  Close out the weekend with BU’s own slam poetry group, Speak for Yourself.

 Feb. 22 from 4-5 p.m.             Writing Papers and Writing Assistance (CAS 213)  Meet specialists from the ERC’s Writing Assistance program, Arts and Sciences Writing Center, and the COM Writing Center.  Discussion will include attitudes toward writing, interpreting writing assignments, and how to best utilize writing assistance resources at BU.

 Feb. 23 from 5-6 p.m.             Got Sleep? (CAS 204B)  Learn about common sleep issues from both the clinical and wellness perspectives and get your zzz’s.

 Feb. 23 at 9 p.m.                     Multicultural Greek Council at BU Central (GSU lower level)  BU’s Multicultural Greek Council hosts an event in BU Central.

 Feb. 24 at 9 p.m.                     Roast of Dean Elmore at BU Central (GSU lower level)  Come watch some of BU’s best as they roast Dean of Students Kenn Elmore on the BU Central stage…things are bound to get heated!
