Leave of Absence for External Study Abroad

If you are considering going on an external (non-BU) study abroad program, you have come to the right place.

1. The BU Study Abroad office is your guide to the process.
Please see External Programs for BU Students Only for information and a comprehensive checklist of steps to take before, during, and after your semester studying away from BU.

2. A leave of absence from BU is the final step to make it official.
Once you complete the steps (linked above under #1), you will need to contact our office to set up an appointment to arrange a leave of absence for the semester that you will be studying externally. These appointments are typically scheduled in November and December for students studying abroad in the spring, and in May and June for students studying abroad in the fall. We’ll email you to confirm your appointment date and time, and will attach a fact sheet and a leave of absence request form.  If you need to finalize your leave arrangements after you’ve left Boston, don’t worry.  We can help you with this!

3. Review the fact sheet before you come to the USC for your appointment.
This semester-specific fact sheet has answers to many common questions about taking a leave of absence from BU for an external study abroad. If you think of questions we haven’t answered, jot them down so we can review these together.

4. You’re almost done.
Print and complete the leave of absence request form we sent you, and bring it with you to your appointment at the USC.
