My research focuses on the effects of perinatal nutrition on brain development. Specifically, we are studying how supplementation of the vital nutrient choline during pregnancy and early postnatal life can protect the brain against various neural insults, such as Alzheimer’s disease and autism. Currently, we use animal models of both Alzheimer’s disease and autism to measure the effects of choline supplementation on neurogenesis and the expression of neurotrophins and growth factors with in the brain. A student research position would entail assistance with animal care, genotyping, dissections, RNA/DNA/protein extraction, RNA/DNA/protein quantification, Western blot analysis, RTPCR, ELISA, and data collection and analysis.
