Welcome to UROP!
News and Announcements:
What is UROP?
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Program (UROP) facilitates participation by BU undergraduates in faculty-mentored research across all disciplines. UROP can help students to connect with faculty members who want to involve undergraduates in their research. UROP also provides financial support for summer research fellowships, academic year stipends, research supplies, and travel for research or to professional meetings. UROP funds are awarded competitively to students who write grant proposals for Fall, Spring and Summer funding rounds. Since UROP ’s inception during the 1997-1998 school year, we have funded over 700 awards to Boston University students.
BU encourages students to discover the excitement
of research, which can enable students to explore new ways of learning.
Hands-on research training brings added depth to topics covered in the classroom
and often proves to be the formative experience for undergraduates who are
making decisions about their future careers. Our definition of research is
broad, and research projects may come from all academic areas and from either the Charles River Campus or the BU Medical School. Students may participate in any scientific or scholarly activity
that leads to:
- the production of new knowledge
- increased problem-solving capabilities (including design and analysis of a research project)
- original critical or historical theory and interpretation
The UROP research experience generally involves mentoring of a student project by a faculty
member working in his or her area of expertise. Students conduct research either on individual research projects or as part of a larger team. Students learn invaluable
investigatory and analytical skills while working for approximately 10-20
hours per week during the academic year. During the summer, UROP-supported students perform
full-time research for an approximately ten-week period, as well as participating in a series
of enrichment activities designed to further their skills as investigators.
Because the student receives training directly from the faculty mentor,
the results of student research are usually of the highest quality and often result in meeting abstracts or publications.
The UROP Office is located at 143 Bay State Road and is open 9-5 Monday through Friday. The UROP staff is available to publicize and promote faculty
projects, and to help students learn how to find a research mentor, apply for funding, and prepare research proposals. In addition, we maintain files about summer research opportunities outside of Boston University. Feel free to contact us by phone, email, or in person. We look forward to meeting you!
