Opportunities at BU

National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REUs) at BU:

Biological Chemistry: Students from outside Boston University who are completing the freshman, sophomore, or junior year, including students in two-year community colleges, are eligible for this exciting ten-week mentored research experience. Students will receive a stipend, free on-campus housing, and a laboratory budget. Travel assistance is also available.

Biomedical Engineering: Current sophomoress or juniors in any engineering, mathematics or natural science discipline are eligible for this ten-week research opportunity. Students will receive a stipend as well as free on-campus housing.

Marine Science: Ten-week mentored research internship at one of four institutions in Woods Hole, MA. Includes stipend and student housing.

Photonics: Ten-week mentored research experience in one of 16 photonics labs at BU. Includes stipend, student housing, and a lab budget.

University of Hawaii Summer Research Internship
8-week summer program to include didactic research education, participation in conducting a research project, and clinical job shadowing. Open to current first-years, sophomores, juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing health-related careers.
RISE at Rutgers
8- or 10-week summer program to include lab and research experiences and acadmic/professional enrichment seminars. All students are eligible; however, underrepresented minorities, students from economically/educationally disadvantaged or non-traditional backgrounds, those who are the first generation in their families to attend college, and those who attend colleges without research opportunities are highly encouraged to apply. Includes stipend, housing, and travel reimbursement.
University of Maryland - College Park Summer Research Opportunity
8-week summer program to include lab and research experiences, didactic science lectures, and opportunities for professional development, mentoring, and networking. Open to juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a doctorate in the social, behavioral and economic sciences. All students are eligible; however, those from underrepresented populations are highly encouraged to apply.
UMass Amherst Summer Program for Undergraduate Research

The Graduate Studies Program at Albany Medical College in Albany, NY is offering outstanding Summer Undergraduate Research Programs (SURP) for undergraduate students who wish to learn about career opportunities in the biomedical sciences.
Treefrog Ecology in Panama
Each year (2008-2010) the project will fund one American student (citizen or permanent resident) and one Latin American student
to do research on ecology, behavior and evolution of red-eyed treefrogs, as part of the Warkentin & Vonesh lab team at the
Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. This is a great opportunity to participate in cutting edge research in a biologically and intellectually rich and diverse environment.

ACM Newberry Library Program in the Humanities
The Associated Colleges of the Midwest offers a semester-long fall seminar and a series of one-month seminars during the winter and spring terms. Seminars are offered on a wide variety of topics, but all seminars are designed to allow students to create their own research project appropriate to the Newberry Library collections.
Albert Einstein College of Medicine Summer Internships
The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine offers college students the unique opportunity to work in a research laboratory at one of the world's top-ranking scientific institutions. SURP is national in scope: approximately 40 students from all over the country participate each year. These students arrive at Einstein in mid-June and spend nine weeks in a laboratory in one of ten basic science departments.
American Psychological Association Student Travel Award
The APA Summer Science Institute (SSI) is a 9-day intensive program designed to immerse students in the science of psychology. The Institute gives students an opportunity to explore the intellectual, personal, and social processes of scientific inquiry and to experience cutting-edge psychological research through seminars and hands-on laboratory activities.
American Society for Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowship
Since 1953, the ASM Materials Education Foundation and leading ASM Chapters nationwide have awarded scholarships totaling over $1 million. Currently 37 scholarships are awarded annually through the ASM International Foundation, which is supported by member contributions and other gifts. Most of these awards include a certificate of recognition, travel and housing allowances for attendance at the awards ceremony during the Society's annual Awards Dinner. The ASM Foundation Scholarship Awards and the ASM Foundation Technical & Community College Scholarship Awards are presented through local ASM chapters.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
2007 Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity in MRI at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, Boston MA. The Cardiac MR Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has a research position for an undergraduate student in electricalengineering, biomedical engineering, physics or medical physics.  Students with experience and/or interest in learning about biomedical image processing, image registration, Matlab may apply. The project focuses on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, for imaging the heart. The goal of this project is image fusion - combining two imaging methods-MRI and electrophysiology data (see below). This on-going project will provide a student with a fun experience in cardiac MRI, image processing methods and software.  Salary is competitive.

Biomedical Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (B-SURE)
This program offers summer support to undergraduate Sophomores and Juniors currently in engineering, mathematics, computer, physical, or chemical science tracks to explore the wealth of opportunities provided in the biomedical sciences. Candidates may choose to work with any of the approximately thirty mentors in eight departments within the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. The program runs for ten weeks (early June through mid August) during which time you will be required to devote full time to the program. Students in the program will receive a salary of at least $3000 with additional allowance for travel and housing costs for non local students.
Caltech - Minority Undergraduate Research Fellowships (MURFs)

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
The Undergraduate Research Program (URP) provides one of the few places in the world where young people are instructed in the techniques of modern biology while becoming integrated members of a vibrant scientific community.   Approximately 25 students from around the world will be accepted to the 10-week summer program to work with senior Laboratory staff members on independent research projects, specifically in areas of: Cancer Biology, Neuroscience, Plant Biology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Macromolecular Structure, and Bioinformatics.

Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) - Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP)
Cornell Center for Materials Research
The Cornell Center for Materials Research is offering a special summer research program with a stipend, room in one of Cornell's on-campus dorms and additional funds for travel (non-CU students only). During the ten-week period from June 6th to August 13th, students will work with Cornell faculty on interdisciplinary materials research projects involving chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering disciplines. Students will also participate in an organized program of lectures, mini-courses (e.g. electronics, microscopy), laboratory visits and a variety of recreational activities.

Earthwatch
Earthwatch Institute engages people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
A summer research program for undergraduate students between their junior and senior year of studies is established at Fred Hutchinson. Students spend a nine week period as part of a research team after selecting an area of interest. Students must be able to commit to the dates of the program to apply and to be considered for acceptance in the program.

The current stipend for the 9-week program is $4000. Housing and meals costs are paid directly by the students in the program. Fred Hutchinson negotiates and facilitates a housing option for out-of-town students at Stevens Court residence hall, an apartment-style residence hall at the University of Washington. This facility is about 10 minutes from the center by bus. The approximate cost at Stevens Court is $1250 for 9 weeks, and students in the intern program are housed together in individual four-person apartments on a same-sex basis. Passes for regional Metro transport (buses) are provided to students for the summer at an approximate cost of $27.

Great Lakes Summer Student Fellowship Program
This program provides students with an exciting opportunity to conduct research in the Great Lakes region under the mentorship of an individual scientist or professional. Summer fellowships are available in a broad range of fields including Aquatic Ecology, Ecosystem Modeling, Maritime Archaeology, Marine Instrumentation, and Communications/ Outreach.

There are twenty-five (25) full-time, twelve-week positions available. Preference is given to currently enrolled or just-graduated undergraduates, although graduate student applications will also be considered. Successful applicants will receive a stipend of $5,000 for the twelve-week fellowship.

HACU National Internship Program (Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities)
The HACU National Internship Program (HNIP) recruits college students for paid summer- and semester-long internships at federal agencies and private corporations in Washington, D.C., and throughout the country. These ten- and fifteen-week internship programs give college students direct experience in a diversity of careers in the federal and corporate sectors.

Los Alamos Undergraduate Research Semester
The Undergraduate Student (UGS) Program at LANL offers summer, part-time, and full-time internships for undergraduate students. This year-round program gives students the opportunity to obtain valuable work experience while they pursue their undergraduate degree. Internships are available in technical and administrative fields.
Materials Research Science and Engineering Center at Columbia
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program enabled 12 students to be involved in research over the summer of 2004 with MRSEC and other materials faculty. In addition, the students visited industrial and government research laboratories in the NYC metropolitan area, and attended a weekly seminar series describing the diverse areas in materials science and engineering. The Columbia University Summer Research Program for Students from Historically Underrepresented Groups provided supplemental support and enrichment activities for our REU program.

MIT - Summer Research Opportunities
The MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP) began in 1986 as an institutional effort to address the issue of underrepresentation of African Americans, Mexican Americans, Native Americans, and Puerto Ricans in engineering and science in the United States. Today, this program seeks to identify talented sophomores and juniors from a broader array of backgrounds and from around the country who might benefit from spending a summer on MIT's campus, working in a research laboratory under the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers, who are MIT faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and advanced graduate students. Students who participate in this program will be better prepared and motivated to pursue advanced degrees, thereby helping to sustain a rich talent pool in critical fields of scientific investigation.

NASA - Summer Internships for Women and Minority Undergraduates Undergraduate Student Research Program (NASA-USRP), an opportunity for undergraduates to spend research time at one of its 9 centers. NASA is seeking undergraduate students from diverse communities who are interested in a challenging research experience at a NASA center . 10-week Summer sessions and 15-week Fall sessions will available. Aligned with NASA's research and development mission, the USRP program provides students with a technical mentor and excellent hands-on experience. Students will receive weekly stipends of $500, plus round-trip travel allowance.

National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, GEM Fellowship Announcement  
The GEM Fellowship programs are designed to offer opportunities for underrepresented minority students to obtain MS degrees in engineering and Ph.D. degrees in engineering and the natural and physical sciences through a program of paid summer internships and graduate financial assistance.

For 27 years, our companies and universities have worked together providing graduate education in engineering and science to over 2,400 underrepresented minority students. GEM is a unique network of universities, companies, government agencies, alumni and faculty. Through this collaboration, the success of students attaining graduate degrees is maximized.

National Endowment for the Humanities - Summer Internships
NEH is an independent grant-making agency of the United States government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities.

National Institutes of Health: NIH Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research

National Museum of Natural History Research Training Program
The Research Training Program offers a ten-week summer research and study curriculum exclusively for currently enrolled undergraduate students. The program actively facilitates the education, training, and encouragement of the next generation of natural history researchers by hosting opportunities for students to explore natural history science, and pursue meaningful research projects with mentoring Smithsonian professionals in the biological, geological,and anthropological disciplines. Helping students develop confidence and competence in the research process is the cornerstone of this Program.

National Science Foundation - Research Experiences for Undergraduates Sites
NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location.

Students must contact the individual sites for information and application materials. NSF does not have application materials and does not select student participants. A contact person and contact information is listed for each site.

National Science Foundation - Research Experiences for Undergraduates Supplements
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specially designed for the purpose. REU Supplements may be included in proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or as supplements to ongoing NSF-funded projects. Undergraduate student participants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions.

To take advantage of this opportunity, you must discuss it with a professor with whom you are interested in working to see if s/he can take advantage of applying for an REU supplement.

New England Resource Directory
The New England Resource Directory provides information to students, advisors and administrators on outreach efforts, internships and science-related programs at New England educational institutions, and biomedical and biotechnology organizations. The directory describes non-degree programs sponsored by high schools, colleges, universities, professional and graduate schools, hospitals, private industry, foundations and government agencies.

NIH
The National Institute of Health is looking for more student interns to participate in research at its institutes. There is also an interest in research on "research integrity and responsibility" (guidelines and criteria on the responsible conduct for research are forthcoming on this topic). Training opportunities abound within the institutes and NIH-funded research.

Ohio State University Summer Research Opportunities Program (SURP) 0
The Summer Research Opprtunities Program(SROP) at Ohio State is a summer research experience designed to help minority undergraduates explore opportunities for graduate study and academic careers. As a participant in this program, you will work with a faculty sponsor ona mutually agreed upon area of research and begin to develop the kind of student-professor relationship that is crucial to success in graduate school.

ONR - Officeof Naval Research Summer Internships
Ten week summer research opportunities at the Naval Research Laboratory or a Naval Systems Command Laboratory. Participating Laboratories are located in California, Florida, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Washington DC.

PMABS Summer Internships for Undergraduates
The Partnership for Minority Advancement in the Biomolecular Sciences at the University of North Carolina provides this useful site for undergraduates. Currently, 50 different opportunities for undergraduates are posted here, from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, to The Rockefeller University Fellowship program. Internships are grouped by region of the country (Western, Southern, Eastern, etc.), and further grouped by university and topic. Note that many deadlines are in February.

SMART (Summer Minority Access to Research Training), University of Colorado
The University of Colorado at Boulder offers 10-week summer research internships through the Summer Multicultural Access to Research Training (SMART) program. The internships provide hands-on experience in research and an introduction to graduate education at a leading university. Twenty to twenty five undergraduates from institutions nationwide take part in this challenging and informative program each summer.

SMART interns conduct research projects in science, math, and engineering fields under the guidance of a faculty mentor and see firsthand graduate student life at a major institution. Interns also interact in the social environment of a large university and in a community of underrepresented peers.

 
Smithsonian Environmental Research Center
The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) leads the Nation in research on linkages of land and water ecosystems in the coastal zone, and provides society with knowledge to meet critical environmental challenges in the 21st century.
Society of Toxicology: Minority Undergraduate Student and Advisor Awards  
Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) Summer Student Program
How about spending 10 weeks at the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore doing research on our solar system, interacting binary stars, quasars at the edge of the universe, or on our quest for intelligent life elsewhere? You will also get familiar with the Hubble Space Telescope mission AND be paid approximately $380 per week. Students will participate directly in research, including data acquisition, reduction, and interpretation. A different opportunity is also available in STScI's Office of Public Outreach (OPO). OPO has a national program to bring the scientific results and technology of the Hubble Space Telescope to teachers, students, and the general public.
Stonybrook University: Center for Environmental Molecular Science
The Center for Environmental Molecular Science (CEMS) at Stony Brook University invites applications from undergraduate students to participate in a summer research program. The Center for Environmental Molecular Science involves a collaboration between Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory, both situated on eastern Long Island in New York.   CEMS research is focused on understanding the mechanisms that govern the behavior of chemical contaminants in our environment.    

Stonybrook University: IBRP Webpage
Stony Brook seeks to cultivate this interaction through an innovative summer research program known as the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Program (IBRP). Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the IBRP will enable up to ten undergraduates who otherwise would study and work solely in the physical sciences or engineering to spend ten weeks working at the frontiers of biomedical research.          

Stonybrook University: REU Chemistry Webpage
The Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook University is hosting a ten-week program for qualified undergraduates majoring in chemistry. The program will provide 10 promising undergraduate students with the opportunity to experience hands on research in major areas of molecular science.   REU participants will be assigned to a faculty mentor and become fully integrated into active research groups using state-of-the-art facilities. Participants will have the opportunity to work closely with their faculty mentor, attend weekly seminars, participate in workshops and present their research results at a student symposium at the close of the program.

Stonybrook University: SUNY AGEP (Alliance for Graduate Education & the Professoriate) Summer Research Institute
SUNY AGEP sponsors an annual Summer Research Institute (SRI), which offers qualified underrepresented minority undergraduates in the SMET disciplines an enriching and valuable research experience. Participants are placed under the direction and guidance of faculty members and researchers at Stony Brook University for an intensive ten-week residential program. At the end of the SRI, all participants are expected to give a presentation on their research project at the SRI Research Symposium. Students are also expected to submit an abstract of their research during the seventh week of the program, which is published in the symposium program booklet. A final paper must be submitted on the last day of the program.   This experience offers students the chance to participate in a real conference environment.

Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience (SAGE)
SAGE, the Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience, is a unique educational program designed to introduce students in geophysics and related fields to "hands on" geophysical exploration and research. The program emphasizes both teaching of field methods and research related to a variety of basic and applied problems.

The Leadership Alliance
The Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP), principally for underserved and underrepresented students, offers undergraduates the opportunity to work for eight to ten weeks under the guidance of a faculty or research mentor at a participating Alliance institution. Through this one-on-one collaboration, students gain theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and scientific experimentation. SR-EIP is designed to encourage students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, social sciences and humanities to consider research careers in the academic, public or private sectors. Students are required to present a written report and/or abstract at the end of their summer research activity and complete a program evaluation. All participants are expected to participate in the Leadership Alliance’s annual, national symposium and to make oral or poster presentations of their research. Students receive a stipend, travel and housing.

U.S. Department of Energy--Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships
This program places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities. Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engineering because of the nature of the experience. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. The different laboratories each offer different research opportunities (see Choosing a Lab).

The summer programs at the various laboratories will run from late May to mid-August, fall programs run from August through December and spring programs from January through May. The exact start date will depend on the laboratory and will be given to participants who have been accepted at that specific laboratory. Students are required to participate for the full term of the program.

UMASS - Northeast Alliance AGEP Minority Graduate Education Program
The Northeast Alliance Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst recruits, supports and mentors underrepresented minority students interested in academic careers so they may pursue Ph.D's in science, mathematics or engineering disciplines.  
UMASS - Summer Research Opportunities
An 8-week, full-time research program on the University of Massachusetts Medical School campus in Worcester. Each student will be paired with a faculty mentor and placed in a research lab. In addition to their lab research requirements, students will participate in discussions with research faculty and graduate students. All students will complete the program by participating in a poster session. The program will include a maximum of 20 participants.
UNCF-Merck Science Initiative, Undergraduate Research Fellowship
The UNCF-Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Awards are intended to encourage the interest of African American undergraduate students in furthering their science education and pursuing biomedical science careers by providing tuition support and opportunities for research experience in a state-of-the-art industrial laboratory.
University of Delaware Program in Bridge Engineering
The REU Program in Bridge Engineering provides a valuable educational experience for undergraduate students through research participation. REU projects feature high-quality interaction of students on multidisciplinary research projects with faculty and other research mentors, as well as access to appropriate facilities and professional development opportunities.

University of Florida - University Scholars Program
The University Scholars Program introduces undergraduate students at the University of Florida to the exciting world of academic research. In the Program, students work one-on-one with UF faculty on selected research projects. Through this initiative, students will take away an understanding of and appreciation for the scholarly method. The University Scholars Program serves as an exceptional capstone to the academic careers of UF students.

University of Hawaii - Summer Undergraduate Internship Opportunity in Chemistry
The department has a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for Summers 2005 and 2006. The program provides support for undergraduate students to do research with a UH faculty member in a chemistry related area for 10 weeks over the summer. The program is primarily intended to support non-UH students who attend schools with little or no undergraduate research opportunities. However, students attending schools with undergraduate chemistry research facilities will be accepted on a space available basis or if UH can offer a unique research opportunity not available at your home institution. Each participant will receive a stipend of $300/week and funds, if needed, to cover room, board, and travel expense

MU Summer Research Internship Program in the Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology

The MU Graduate School, in cooperation with academic departments and the Life Sciences Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, provides undergraduates who have completed at least two years of college with an opportunity to work full time on a research project under the guidance of an MU faculty member. Students also join with more 60 other summer interns to participate in weekly brown-bag lunches, evening seminars, career presentations, workshops on research ethics and communicating research, field trips, social events and specialty discussions. Sponsored by the Louis Stokes Missouri Alliance for Minority Participation (LS-MoAMP).
Eligibility: Ideal candidates should be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, have completed two or more years of college and members of underrepresented minority groups.
Pay: A stipend of $2,600, one hour of research credit, travel expenses and room and board are provided.

Undergraduate Research Internships in Alternative Fuel Technology

The Alliance for Collaborative Research in Alternative Fuel Technology (ALL-CRAFT), led by the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) and funded by the National Science Foundation, is funding research internships for Summer 2006 and Academic Year 2006-2007. ALL-CRAFT is developing storage technologies for natural gas, based on a porous carbon made from Missouri waste corncob and synthetic materials, for fuel tanks in clean automobiles, collection of natural gas from landfills, and large-scale shipping of natural gas from Alaska. Two summer internships are offered at MU in the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering (fabrication of storage materials), and Civil and Environmental Engineering (natural gas from landfills); one at Renewable Alternatives LLC, Columbia (bioenergy); and two at the Midwest Research Institute, Kansas City (design and testing of prototype tank for cars). Five academic-year internships are offered in the listed departments at MU.
Eligibility: Undergraduates with a math/science/engineering background, an interest in pursuing a major in one of these areas, and an interest in interdisciplinary work, transforming scientific discoveries into technological innovations, and helping build a sustainable world. If possible, the summer internships at the Midwest Research Institute will be filled with students whose home is in Kansas City. Students from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Pay: Summer internship: Stipend of $3,000, one hour of academic credit, travel to and from Columbia, on-campus housing and meals. Academic-year internships: Stipend of $1,000, three hours of academic credit, travel to and from Columbia.

University of Washington Research Opportunities
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute Summer Student Fellowship Program Students from virtually all U.S. and foreign universities that have marine interests have participated in the research at WHOI since it was founded in 1930. WHOI's educational role, at the graduate level, was formalized in 1968 with a change in its charter and the signing of an agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a Joint Program leading to doctoral (Ph.D. or Sc.D.) or engineer's degrees. Joint master's degrees are also offered in selected areas of the program. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is also authorized to grant doctoral degrees independently. During recent years, an average of 140 students per year have been involved in the MIT/WHOI Joint Program. A number of Postdoctoral Scholar awards are given each year to recent recipients of doctorates in scientific and engineering fields. In addition, there are Research Fellowships in Marine Policy available to professionals in the social sciences, law, or natural sciences. Their work helps to sustain our environment and improve the quality of life for ourselves and for future generations.
