After two weeks of intensive introduction to a selection of open problems and problem areas, participants will break into groups working on problems in different areas. Participants will be asked to make short presentations, in daily seminars and problem sessions, of background literature and of progress made, or of obstacles encountered. At the end of the program each group will be asked to prepare a written summary and an oral presentation of the summer’s endeavors. Participants will receive a stipend of $3,600 and will live on campus with housing paid. Travel and food are left to the participants’ devices.

ASU will host Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Development of Safe Nanomaterials for Biological Applications in Summer 2014. Students will work with research mentors in a 10-week multidisciplinary summer research program. Housing, a stipend, and meal and travel allowances will be provided. Faculty from biological sciences, chemistry, physical sciences and other related disciplines will serve as mentors for the program. All research projects will be based on novel concepts of design and development of new nanomaterials for biological applications. Students will participate in a full-time closely mentored lab research project along with seminars and various professional development workshops, such as the responsible conduct of research, professional communication skills, career opportunities in academia and industry, and the graduate school application process. Students will present their findings at a poster session or research symposium during the final week of the program.

The REU site at historical Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, AL., home of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and Redstone Arsenal, will offer undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct various types of physics research. Our program is designed especially for juniors and seniors majoring in the STEM fields: sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics. During the 10-week summer program (May 27 – Aug 1,2014), each student will work with physics faculty mentors and graduate students on cutting-edge experiments. Research findings will be reported, lectures and mini-courses attended, and recreational activities enjoyed.
The REU site at Alabama A&M University (AAMU) is an international program which will provide an eight-week research experience to undergraduates beginning mid-May.
Students spend three days at AAMU followed by seven weeks at Nanjing Forestry University (NFU) in China and the remaining three days again at AAMU.
The program will focus on ecological and environmental scientific research of the quickly urbanizing landscape of Nanjing Province in China. This research will engage students in a broad range of ecological and environmental scientific research with a focus on hypothesis-driven quantification, experimentation and the modeling of human-induced ecological and environmental changes, particularly ecosystem responses to urbanization.
University of South Alabama – Structure and Function of Proteins (NSF REU)
10-week summer research program for undergraduates interested in pursuing graduate education in science. Students work full time on a project related to protein Biochemistry, attend conferences on research ethics, and presentations by faculty members.
