Kearns – Linguistics/Psychology/Education

Devin Kearns

Options: Volunteer Basis, Potential for UROP Funding

My research team is currently seeking a motivated BU student to work on a project studying which factors influence how individuals pronounce written words with “misleading” stress cues. We are interested in seeing whether individuals have longer response times and more errors when a word has misleading or contradictory stress cues versus when a word has consistent stress cues.
No prior experience working in a lab setting is necessary, however a strong background in linguistics is essential. In this position, you will be expected to:
• Conduct experiments in which participants will be reading aloud words and nonwords with different stress cues.
• Use Praat to examine participants’ responses and code for lexical stress.
• Work with Dr. Kearns and other RAs to analyze the data.
• Contribute to the writing of conference proposals based on this data.

The opportunity can begin immediately. If you apply and are accepted before 2/25, you may also be able to apply for UROP funding for the summer to continue work on this project.
