Hobai – Cardiology/Critical Care
Options: Volunteer Basis, Independent Funding Available, Potential for UROP Funding, Potential for Work-Study Funding, Potential for Academic Credit
My laboratory is best suited for someone interested in cardiovascular physiology and basic laboratory research. I am a clinician-scientist, and divide my work between the practice of clinical anesthesiology (at Massachusetts General Hospital) and cardiovascular research (at BUMC). My research focuses on understanding the cellular mechanisms that underlie the cardiac dysfunction that develops in patients with sepsis and septic shock. The experiments are performed in laboratory animals (mice and rats). You will receive training on how to measure the contractility and intracellular calcium fluxes in isolated heart cells and how to perform biochemical assays of cardiac regulatory proteins in vitro. You will also be trained in the fundamentals of biomedical research and the scientific method.
