Projects dealing with Mars and its atmosphere will be conducted within the Center for Space Physics during Summer 2013 (and the following academic year). NASA’s upcoming mission to Mars, called the MAVEN satellite, requires some prior knowledge about the regions of Mars’ atmosphere called the Ionosphere. We are developing the first “Mars International Reference Ionosphere (MIRI)” here at BU. A student with good computer skills (preferably with the language IDL, but not required) can work with us on methods to use previous observations from Mars (from the Mars Express and Mars Global Surveyor satellites) to create and validate MIRI.
