Astronomy/Space Physics – Martinis
Options: Independent Funding, UROP, Work-Study
At the BUimaging Science Group (www.buimaging.com) we study processes in the Earth’s upper atmosphere using a variety of data and models. The student will be involved in the analysis of observations coming from optical all-sky imagers built in-house and distributed worldwide. The BU instruments record light from the earth’s ionosphere—a type of faint aurora. In addition, data from satellite and ground-based GPS receivers will be analyzed to complement the optical information. The results of the analysis will provide insights on the behavior of the different processes that are observed. Opportunities exist for potential trips to observing sites and attendance at professional meetings.
The student should have some programming (preferably knowledge of IDL) and analytical skills. Interested applicants should provide a CV. Please contact Professor Martinis to learn more about this opportunity.
