Who makes up the Student Union?
Any student who is in good academic and judicial standing is considered a member of the Student Union. The voting members of the Student Union are elected to represent their College Governments, Residence Hall Associations and Consortias (Student Groups) respectively. The Student Union is under the direction of an executive board elected at the end of each spring semester.
What Does the Student Union Do?
The Student Union is the main advocacy group on campus. The General Assembly, individual students, and student groups make connections with administrators in order to accomplish student initiatives. We also work closely with the Dean of Students office to make BU a better place.
How do you get involved?
In the Student Union, committees are the major driving force behind change at Boston University. Although representatives are required to serve on committees, any member of the Student Union is welcome to participate. The committees are formed at the beginning of each semester and each focuses on one theme, such as recycling. The goals set forth by the committees are accomplished by meeting with administrators. The committees update the Student Union at our bi-weekly General Assembly meetings which occur on Monday at 8PM.
How do you become a representative?
A member of the Student Union may be elected as a representative of a college government, a Residence Hall Association, or a Consortia (student groups).
Residence Hall Association Representative:Upon arriving at Boston University you will receive information about your Residence Hall Association. The Vice President of the Residence Hall Association Executive Board serves as the Student Union representative for the building. Attend the meeting at the beginning of the year to run for the position.
School or College Government:Check your School or College as webpage for information on their respective undergraduate student governments. Each page should have a calendar with when each body meets. You should attend one of these meetings and speak to the Executive Board members at your School or College; they will explain to you how they choose a representative.
Student Groups:The Vice-President of every Student Group is a representative to a Consortium. A Consortium is a gathering of Student Groups with similar interests. Each Consortium is then responsible for electing one of their members to serve as its Representative to the General Assembly. Right now there are 13 Consortia: Academic, Athletics, Community Service, Culture, Fraternity and Sorority, Dance, PERD, Political, Professional Associations, Theater, Vocal, Religious, and Special Interests. This is the third year of a Student Union re-arrangement that includes Student Groups in the General Assembly.
