Stanley Rosen

B.A., Ph.D., University of Chicago;
Ph.D. Honoris Causa, New University of Lisbon.

Professor Rosen specializes in the history of philosophy, metaphysics, social and political philosophy, and contemporary thought. After graduating from the University of Chicago, he did post-doctoral work at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. He was a Fulbright Research Professor at the University of Paris, served as a postdoctoral fellow of the Humanities Research Institute of the University of Wisconsin, and pursued his research at Tübingen and Heidelberg Universities and the London School of Economics. Professor Rosen has been a visiting professor at both the San Diego and Berkeley campuses of the University of California, the University of Nice, and the Scuola Superiore in Pisa. He has held the Companys Lectureship at the University of Barcelona, the Cardinal Mercier Lectureship at Louvain University, the Priestley Lectureship at the University of Toronto, and the Gilson Lectureship at the Institut Catholique in Paris, published in 2005 by Presses Universitaires de France. In addition, he has lectured at universities throughout Europe and North America.

Professor Rosen has published fourteen books, the first a volume of poems, the others on subjects such as Plato, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and analytical philosophy, postmodern hermeneutics, and the problem of nihilism. His books and articles have been translated into French, German, Catalan, Italian, Polish, Japanese, and Chinese, among other languages. He is a past president of the Metaphysical Society of America. In December 2005 Yale University Press will publish his study of Plato's Republic.
