Sir Hans Kornberg

After working for one year as a (very) junior technician in the laboratory of Sir Hans Krebs (1945-46), Hans Kornberg studied at, and graduated from, the University of Sheffield (UK). Before coming to Boston University in 1995, Dr. Kornberg undertook post-doctoral research in the USA at Yale, UC Berkeley, and The Public Health Research Institute of the City of New York (1953-55) and, in the UK, at the University of Oxford (1955-60) where he also held a lectureship at Worcester College. He was appointed as the first Professor of Biochemistry of the University of Leicester (UK) in 1960 and, in 1975 moved to the University of Cambridge (UK) as Sir William Dunn Professor and Head of the Biochemistry department. He was also elected a Fellow of Christ’s College and, in 1882, as Master of that College; he served in that capacity until 1995. Professor Kornberg was knighted in 1978 "for services to Science"; his work has been recognized by his election to The Royal Society (1965), the German Academy of Sciences "Leopoldina" (1982); the National Academy of Sciences of the USA (1986); the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (1987); the American Philosophical Society (1993); the Academia Europaea (1989); and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (Italy) (1997). Sir Hans has also been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (1972), the American Academy of Microbiology (1992) and Phi Beta Kappa (1996); he is also an Honorary Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians, the British Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Biology, and the Biochemical Societies of Germany, Japan, Britain, and the USA. Sir Hans holds the Colworth Medal of The Biochemical Society (1965) and the Warburg Medal of the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1973), as well as 11 honorary doctorates. He has published over 250 papers in professional journals and is actively engaged in research.
