Anthony Barrand

Professor Barrand combines an active career as a performer and scholar of Anglo-American vernacular song and dance with research interests in the psychology of perception and aesthetics. His most recent publication is the edited anthology Northern Harmony: Plain Tunes, Fuging Tunes, and Anthems from the New England Singing School Tradition (fourth edition, 1998). His publications include Longsword Dances from Traditional and Manuscript Sources: As Collated and Notated by Ivor Allsop (1996) and Six Fools and a Dancer: The Timeless Way of the Morris. He has edited the journal Country Dance and Song and is the founder of the Marlboro Morris Ale, an annual national gathering of Morris dancers in Vermont. He has recorded 25 albums, cassettes, and compact discs and is the creator of several seasonal programs, including "Nowell Sing We Clear: A Pageant of Midwinter Carols." He is widely known for his singing performances of English folk songs as part of the duo John Roberts and Tony Barrand. In 2003 Professor Barrand deposited, by invitation, his fieldwork collection of Morris Sword and Clog Dancing videos and film to the Archive of Folk Culture at the Library of Congress.
