Application Services
Within University Information Systems, Application Services is the group responsible for creating, integrating and maintaining software systems that handle the major administrative functions of the University. Although UIS Application Services generally operates behind the scenes, the systems that fall under their responsibility are quite visible. A BU student interacts with systems implemented and maintained by UIS Application Services starting from the time they apply and continuing right through class registrations, grades, housing assignments, meal plans, student elections, graduation, alumni reunions and annual donations to the alumni fund! The administrative offices of the University rely even more on UIS systems to help them provide service to students, alumni, employees and other members of the BU community.
Application Services can implement a system by developing it directly, by installing a commercial software solution and integrating it with University data or by facilitating the transfer of data to and from external service providers. In addition, when administrative offices require access to data stored in UIS databases, Application Services has many tools they can offer to facilitate the retrieval and presentation of that data.
There are many web pages and sites that utilize University Data that are developed or integrated through UIS Application Services. The following link documents the web sites that depend on Application Services for design, development maintenance or, in some cases, just integration with University data.
Because of the University’s reliance on solutions provided by Application Services, there is considerable interest around the campus in knowing what projects have been completed and which ones are getting started. The first pair of links below will provide a representative sample of projects that were completed in the 2006-2007 July to June timeframe and of ones that are in the works for 2007-2008. In addition, there are samples of the kinds of systems that require regular maintenance or upgrades and the kinds of project requests that are generated and solved within UIS in order to improve the speed and reliability of existing and future systems.
