UB/UBMS Fall 2014 Registration
Current student registration for the Fall 2014 program is Tuesday, September 16 at 4 p.m. in the Boston University School of Education, Two Silber Way, room 130. All current students are expected to attend and to register in-person. If you are unable to do so, please contact UB/UB MS staff to arrange an alternate day to register. The afterschool program starts Monday, September 22. Detailed information will be sent to students via e-mail.
Fall Open House Cancelled
Please note that the 2013 Fall Open House has been cancelled. We ask that any parent/guardian with questions about their student’s progress call the office at 617-353-3551 to speak to a member of the program’s staff.
FUEL Information Session for Boston Families
On Saturday, September 28 at 10 a.m. Upward Bound at Boston University will host a parent information session for its new partnership with FUEL Education. The event will be held in the Boston University School of Education, Two Silber Way, room 140. Families have probably received phone calls from FUEL about this event. Fall 2012 Student Registration
Students, please mark your calendars – Fall registration is Tuesday, September 25th from 4:00-5:30. All enrolled students are required to attend. Students having conflicts with this time should call the office in advance.
Summer Awards Ceremony – 2012
The Summer Awards Ceremony is Thursday, August 2nd at 6pm. All families of students are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Summer Open House – 2012
The Summer Open House is Saturday, June 9th from 10am-12pm. All families of admitted students are welcome. Families of students attending for the first time are highly encouraged to attend
Summer Testing – 2012
SUMMER PLACEMENT TESTING ROOM CHANGE. Due to an unexpected issue with the KCB building, this week’s placement testing has been moved to the School of Education, Two Silber Way, room 130 on May 21 (today), May 23 (Wednesday), & May 24 (Thursday). Testing on May 22 (Tuesday) will be in Sargent College, 635 Commonwealth, room 101. Testing starts at 3:30 p.m. all days. Testing on Monday and Tuesday is for current 9 and 10 grades and testing on Wednesday and Thursday is for current juniors. If you can’t come on your assigned day, please come one of the other days listed above. Please call UB cell phone if lost or running late.
Summer Forms – 2012
No, that big packet we sent home is not an application – it is Summer Forms. Students have to fill them out every year in order to be here in the summer. With the exception of the Immunization Record and Health History Form they were due May 11th. Please get them in right away. The Immunization Record and Health History Forms must be completed by a medical professional. Please schedule an appointment right away. You will not be allowed to move into the dorms without these.
May 1, Decision Deadline!
Seniors, remember – May 1 is the college deposit deadline. If you have not yet made a decision and set your deposit contact Allison right away.

UBMS Snow Closure Policy
UB/UBMS Afterschool classes and study hall will be canceled on any days on which either Chelsea or Boston Public Schools are canceled due to weather. We will also close if the Boston University Charles River Campus closes due to weather. If schools are open, but a storm hits during the day, it is possible we may also cancel the afterschool program. On any day that UBMS is canceled we will communicate through e-mail as well as messages on the webpage. Any students or families with questions should call 617-353-3551.
New UBMS Mentors
Congratulations to UBMS students Jamilatu Abubakar, Christine Downing, Guillermo Erazo, Regine Gelin, Michael LeBron, and Sonny Nguyen who were selected to serve at UBMS Mentors for new students entering the program in January. Mentors, don’t forget, training will be held on Friday, January 7 from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Boston University, School of Education at Two Silber Way, room 140.
UBMS attends The N.E.U.R.O.N Conference
On November 6th and 7th, seven UBMS students attended the NorthEast Under/graduate Research Organization for Neuroscience Conference which was hosted at Quinnipiac College in Hamden, CT. Students enjoyed famous New Haven pizza on the campus of Yale University and attended conference sessions including: Saving Your Brain: How Learning Keeps New Neurons Alive by Dr. Shors from Rutgers university and Animal Insect Brain Primer – Specialized Senses for Navigation by Dr. Zee from Northeastern University. The UBMS students also spoke to students from several different colleges who were presenting posters on the research they are doing as undergraduates.

The Upward Bound 20th Anniversary Celebration was featured in @SED Magazine The article includes pictures from the event on December 5, 2009 and quotes from program alumni, students, parents, program staff, and BPS staff — read the article. The event was a great celebration of both the program and its alumni. Thank you to all who helped plan the event and those who were able to attend.
The 2010 UB Prize
Roberson Ambroise (Regis College), Nicholas Campozano (Lasell College), Bayron McField (UMASS Dartmouth), and Si Xin Lu (Simmons College) were recipients of the 2010 UB Prize. The Boston University Upward Bound Prize is a $500 prize offered to a current Boston University Upward Bound college-going seniors to assist with the cost of freshman year expenses. Winners are selected based upon academic achievement, community involvement and financial need.
UB featured in the Gallery of Best Practices at the BPS Partnership Conference
Upward Bound was featured in the Gallery of Best Practices at the BPS Partnership Conference on Friday, May 28th. TRIO programs were also included in the study, “Preparing High School Students for Successful Transitions to Postsecondary Education and Employment“, which was distributed at the event, and were mentioned by Gregory Darneider, Special Assistant to U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan in his keynote remarks.
Fenway STEM Scholarships awarded to two BU UBMS Students
Two of ten Colleges of the Fenway STEM Scholarships were awarded to BU UBMS Students. Si Xin Lu and Yan Qi Lin, both UBMS students and members of the Charlestown High School class of 2010, were awarded NSF funded scholarships to study STEM fields at the Colleges of The Fenway. In addition to significant financial support, they will be provided research and internship opportunities, academic and career planning assistance, faculty mentoring and peer support. Si Xin Lu will be attending Simons College where she will study chemistry with the goal of becoming a pharmacist. Yan Qi Lin will be studying Math Education at Wheelock College
UBMS Student Awarded Posse Scholarship
UBMS student, Cesar Hernandez, who is also a member of the Chelsea High Class of 2010 was awarded a Posse Scholarship, which is a four-year, full-tuition scholarship. He was among this year’s 60 Boston area recipients selected from an applicant pool of more than 1,000 nominated students. Cesar will be attending Centre College in KY in the fall where he intends to study pre-medicine. Two BU classic Upward Bound students, Myky Tran (Denison University) and Michael Tran (Centre College) were also awarded Posse Scholarships.
