Upward Bound depends upon the quality of its part-time teaching and tutoring staff to provide instruction, academic support, and guidance to program participants. Upward Bound employs up to 10 tutors and 13 teachers during its summer and academic year programs. Please see the job descriptions that are listed on this site. In person interviews are required of all applicants.  No exceptions will be made.
Tutor Job Description Teaching Job Descriptions
Tutors provide academic tutoring and supervision of students during summer and academic year; provide leadership for assigned groups of students during program activities; and serve as role models. During the summer, residential and nonresidential positions are available (please see sample schedules). During the academic year tutors may work between 2 and 4 days per week. The academic year program operates from 4-8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesday and from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Educational requirements:a high school diploma and at least 2 years of undergraduate coursework. Required experience:1-2 years as an academic tutor or summer camp counselor, demonstrated leadership skills, excellent interpersonal skills and an understanding of the needs of a diverse urban youth population. Teachers: Science, Mathematics, English Language Arts, Problem Solving, Latin, Test Prep, History, Life Skills - Teachers are responsible for planning and conducting instruction in specified subjects. Educational requirements: Minimum of a Bachelor's degree, Master's preferable, in specific academic discipline or secondary education with certification or teaching experience in appropriate content area. Required experience: Minimum 1-2 years teaching experience with high school students, strong teaching skills, demonstrated understanding of the needs of disadvantaged youth, ability to respond to student learning needs with innovative ideas and approaches to instruction, and excellent interpersonal skills. Summer Dormitory Supervisor
Description: The dormitory supervisor resides in the Warren Towers dormitory, monitors program participants in the evening and overnight, and provides supervision on program field trips. The dormitory supervisor also supervises six residential staff, who are primarily undergraduate students, and serves as a liaison between the Upward Bound staff and staff from Boston University's Office of Residence Life.
The dormitory supervisor is responsible for enforcing program policies and, in conjunction with the Office of Residence Life, responding to medical and non-medical emergencies. The dormitory
supervisor also coordinates evening tutorials and recreational activities for program participants. This is an eight week position which includes the week prior to and after the summer program. Housing is provided.

Job requirements: Completed a Bachelors degree; 2 years experience as a residence hall assistant; 1-2 years experience working with high school age population; supervisory experience a plus; and satisfactory CORI check.
