Iwaszkiewicz,
Jaroslaw
Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz (1894-1980) was one of
Poland's most renowned twentieth-century writers,
known for novels, stories, poetry, plays and
essays. In 1919 he co-founded the Skamander
group of experimental poets with Julian Tuwim
and Antoni Slonimskis. In WWII, he was an active
member of the underground resistance which helped
many writers, artists and intellectuals hide
and escape persecuation during the German occupation
of Poland. After the war he was chair of the
Polish Writers Union.
