The Formative village of K'axob was concentrated in the southern part of the site.
The basal platform underlying southern pyramid plaza B, in fact, contains our earliest
settlement evidence. One particularly deep excavation at this locale (labeled as Op. I
on the map) uncovered a continuous sequence of construction commencing shortly after 800
B.C. and continuing through the Early Classic period (ca. A. D. 500) when a pyramid was
raised, effectively sealing the
underlying village. Other excavations that provide a window to this early time period include
Op. VII, VIII, X, XI, and XII. The images to follow show some of the excavated Formative
dwellings and associated artifacts and, hopefully, will answer some frequently asked
questions about life and death in this Maya village of the first millennium B. C.
