Relay team, Dieckfoss, and Wong perform well at Mt. Sac .
April 17-19, 2003.
Walnut, Ca.
The weather was perfect for the distance carnival held Thursday night at Mt. Sac. Cool, overcast and no wind. Jochen Dieckfoss faced much stiffer competition this week compared to the Colonial Relays and came through with the best time in the east. His time of 8:41.61 was only good for eighth place overall, but Dieckfoss' run was excellent for this early in the year, since the competition was probably the best he will face until the nationals. Only three collegians were ahead of Dieckfoss, Dan Lincoln of Arkansas at 8:29.57, who won the race, Bashir Ibrahim of UTEP at 8:35.70, and Isaiah Festa of Wisconsin at 8:39.55. Penn Relays will provide another arena for some outstanding performances, but Dieckfoss will bypass that race in preparation for the America East Championships and the rest of the outdoor season.
Rob Wong continues to amaze the Boston U track fraternity as he ran a personal best 30:12.74 for the 10k. His mark is about a minute faster than he has ever run before. Wong placed 10th overall with that performance.
Jordan Jones also competed, running the 5k, but a slow place for the first two miles resulted in a so-so performance as the race went to the swift kickers. Jones, not known for his finishing kick, was unable to generate enough power to go with the front group over the last mile. His time of 14:42.91, placing him 10th in his section and falls short of the 14:25 needed for NCAA regional qualifying and the 14:34 needed to qualify for the IC-4A Championship meet.
On Saturday, the weather turned picture perfect, warm, sunny
and just delightful. The relay team of Lucjan Zaborowski (48.0), Chris
Brandon (46.6), Steve Deppe (47.4) and Andre Nacaxe (46.9) continued their
streak of breaking records. This time it was the 21 year old record of
3:10.5 set by the team of Jeff Smith, Richard Ward ,Bob Danville, and Trevor Garrick. The
new record, for the present, is 3:09.18. Zaborowski's lead leg put Chris
Brandon in excellent position, despite being out in lane seven. Brandon
took the baton in second place, behind the US Army team, but came out slowly,
due to some tightness in his knee. At the break line on the back straight,
Brandon had slipped back to fifth, but then put it in gear and moved up
dramatically, moving into second place, again behind the US Army team.
Steve Deppe ran a very strong third leg, pulling even with the Army team and
Andre Nacaxe managed to take a slight lead on the handoff. However, the US
Army anchor quickly moved by Nacaxe on the back straight and despite some tough
running down the home straightaway, Nacaxe was unable to overtake the eventual
winners. Both Nacaxe and Brandon ran personal best legs and the team's
overall time was the best college time of the meet.
On Friday, a few members of the relay team went to the Pomona-Pitzer
Invitational, using this meet as a warmup for the Mt. Sac meet. Andre
Nacaxe ran a personal best of 48.04 in the 400, finishing second in his section
and eighth overall. Steve Deppe ran 22.34 in the 200, while Lucjan
Zaborowski ran 22.56.
