2004 Men's & Indoor Championship
Results
Boston University Men's Track Team was in for quite a battle this weekend, as
solid teams from Albany, Northeastern and newcomer, University of Maryland,
Baltimore County (UMBC) came into town to showcase their talents. BU, despite
noticeable weaknesses in a number of events, but up quite a battle. The
young squad came through with some expected outstanding performances by its
upper classmen, but also some very surprising and impressive performances by
a number of freshmen and sophomores.
The old guard led the charge as Dan Coval, finally recovered from years of
frustrating foot injuries ran to a very comfortable win in the 5k. Coval,
now a senior, won his first indoor America East Championship. Senior Jochen
Dieckfoss won the mile handily, but freshman Phil Shaw ran a very tough last
400 to garner a third place for the Terriers.
Jordan Jones, overcoming a cold, struggled quite a bit in the 3k, giving a
valiant effort in competing against the league's best 3k runner (UNH's Steve
Meineilt) held on to get a fifth place.
Senior Matt Adler, also recovering from a bad cold, managed a fifth place in
the 500 meters, won by junior Andre Nacaxe, the defending champ.
Junior Jeff McAulay had the best long jump performance of his career, finishing
third with a final jump of 22-09. McAulay, a biomedical engineer, who has been
struggling with some knee and hamstring problems throughout his college career,
spent most of the past six months working hard to build up his leg strength.
Sophomore Lucjan Zaborowski ran a personal best of 47.90 to finish second to
Idris Payne of Northeastern, the MVP of the meet. Zaborowski came back to anchor
the victorious 4x400 relay team that displayed a solid performance by Adler, who
led off in 49.14, Nacaxe, who broke the race open with a 47.94 leg. Freshman
walkon Matt Howard, disappointed by his disqualification in the 200, ran the race
of his young career, recording a time of 48.24 for his third leg. Zaborowski finished
up with a 47.99.
Sophomore Phil Putis continues to show talent as he almost stole the 1000 meter race.
However, coming around the final turn, he was pushed slightly, but enough to cause him
to loose his balance and forward progress, thus falling off slightly and finished a very
close third.
Freshman Nick Goodman, a very strong and gazelle like runner, won his first America East
title, front running the 800 after initially getting caught in a box for the first 150 meters.
Goodman ran extremely tough, running out of gas at the 750 meter mark and then hanging
on as Donald Drake of Maine came from way back to try and overtake Goodman down the homestretch.
Goodman was the last man standing as he and Drake dove for the finish line, Drake falling
(literally) inches short of victory.
The 4x800 team of Phil Shaw (1:57.5), Dieckfoss (1:54.3), Putis (1:54.3) and Goodman
(1:52.6) had an impressive team effort that resulted in a very strong second place finish
to Albany.
Good solid performances, however could not overcome the lack of being able to have strong
competitors in the sprints, hurdles, jumps and weights. The team fought a good fight,
scoring 94 points, just about the maximum for what Boston U had as firepower. The overall
strength of the other teams was too much for this young group to handle this year. So, the
old saying of "Wait until next year" was the final refrain.
