| Despite spending just three years
with the Terrier track and cross-country programs, Are Nakkim compiled
a lenghty list of athletic achievements.
A two-time national runner-up, and three-time All-America, he currently holds Boston University records in the 1500, steeplechase, and 10K. During the 1987 outdoor campaign, Nakkim posted the nation's fastest times in the steeplechase, 5K, and 10K, before closing out the year by earning All-America honors after finishing second in the 5K at the NCAA Championships. Nakkim was bested only by teammate Dean Crowe. It marked the second consecutive year he was the national runner-up in the event. During the indoor portion of the 1987 season, Nakkim became just the ninth Terrier to capture an individual title at the competitive IC4A Championships, when he won the 5K. Overall, he captured seven individual titles at the indoor and outdoor IC4A, New England, and Greater Boston Championships. His efforts helped the Terriers finish third at the NCAA Championships, marking the highest finish by a New England school, and tied for third at the IC4A Meet during the 1986 season. Nakkim complemented his achievements in indoor and outdoor track with a comparable degree of success in cross-country. He received All-America honors after helping Boston University to a third-place finish at the 1986 NCAA Championships. In 1985 the Terriers placed eighth nationally, while they captured the Greater Boston and New England titles each year. A 1988 graduate of Boston University, who narrowly missed qualifying for the Norwegian Olympic Team in a trio of events, Nakkim holds the existing Terrrier marks in the 10K (28:21,93); steeplechase (8:28.3), and 1500M (3:42.9). |
