Joseph Clark and HGARC

I always find it fascinating when BU Today offers one of these articles on student research into the wealth of material in the Howard Gotieib Archival Research Center. It's a treasure house, and many of its holdings are virtually unexplored. As Joseph Clark is clearly finding, there is really nothing like handling the actual documents of someone like Lynn for bringing one close to the writer's mind, the events and relationships as they developed, and the temper of the times - something that summary history can hardly ever convey as vividly. The HGARC is a wonderful resource, and its archival staff are, in my experience, always ready to help students and faculty with their research. Our students at BU's Editorial Institute, which grants MAs and Ph.Ds in Editorial Studies, have good reason to know: many of them find in HGARC the materials for their theses and dissertations, ranging from revolutionary sermons to a traveller's letters, and from science fiction to the 1940s journals of an anti-fascist or the notebooks of a living poet. I hope BU Today will feature more articles on student research in BU's archive. As this one makes clear, there is significant work that can be done by undergraduates and gradua Frances Whistler Assistant Director, Editorial Institute
