Open Access

I suggest that rather than each University doing their own thing by way of setting up an open access archive it would be much more cost effective - and useful - if Universities combined their efforts. Harvard and MIT are already moving in this direction and I hope that BU would join them along with the other major Universities in the Boston area (Tufts, NorthEastern, Brandeis, BC etc). Not only would this benefit the authors and readers, but it would also facilitate negotiations with the publishers regarding favorable terms for open access, either with or, preferably without, a delay. The American Chemical Society, Elsevier and some of the other publishers who provide very costly journals and have been resisting open access are likely to yield their positions in response to a concerted effort on the part of their most desired authors.
