I was studying abroad in Sydney on BU's Sydney Internship Program (highly recommended) last semester and spent a little over two weeks in NZ after the program. NZ is great but definitely go to Australia, Thailand and anywhere else in that part of the world you can while you are down there b/c there is sooo much cool stuff as you are finding out.
