The sky above and the river below? A closer look reveals an ice-crusted Charles above the BU Bridge, slowly melting on a sunny January day. Photo by Kalman Zabarsky
Whenever I see a “rooftop shot” from Kal Zabarsky, I remember back when I was working at The Towers on Bay State Road, and Kal was shooting from the top of the building into the construction pit that later became the “new” SMG building. It was so cold that the lock froze and Kal was stuck on the roof. He shouted down for help. A student came into my office and said, “Um, there is a guy up on the roof and he is yelling for help. I don’t think he’s going to jump or anything.” I was with one of our lead maintenance people, and we both ran outside. It was bitter cold. The student pointed up to the East Tower, and there was Kal’s little bald head hanging over the side, “Hi Laura!!! Hi Manny!!! I’m stuck outside!!!” Manny and I went straight up to the roof, and Manny freed Kal with the help of his bulldozer like build. When the door opened, there was Kal, with a smile on his face … per usual. And he (of course) got the shot. I love Kal’s rooftop shots, and I hope that the BU Community appreciates all he does!
What a striking, lovely image, and the centrally located figure in red really helps anchor the picture.
