    1. Wait until you graduate and they start sending you emails and mailing flyers constantly about fundraising. I will never give 1 penny beyond the outrageous tuition they charge. If tuition was reasonable I would donate but these universities turn you into a debt slave before you even get your first job.

    2. Matt, Michelle, of course I don’t know about your situations, but for those of us who can afford to give, the opportunity to enhance scholarship funds for those in need helps others avoid “debt slavery” in the future. You and I are already helping to keep tuition lower at public universities by subsidizing their operations through our taxes, which I pay willingly but not voluntarily. No one is forcing you to do the same for BU students, but many of us consider it an altruistic choice.

      1. Great points! I give because I want the affordability of BU to improve (which I wish for all colleges/universities). BU has substantially improved the average real cost of attendance (average tuition – average scholarship) significantly since I was fortunate enough to be a student there.

    3. You get what you pay for.

We’re a premiere research university in one of the most expensive urban markets in the United States. We’re the 3rd largest employer in Boston.

You can’t retain top-tier faculty if you don’t pay them enough to live in the area. You can’t guarantee housing for all four years of undergraduate study in a city campus without incurring administrative, utility, and facility costs. You can’t keep pace with technological advances in industry that impact pedagogy without investment.

BU is expensive, yes, but it’s not arbitrary.

  1. I am thankful for all that BU has done to enable my daughter to attend and proud of what she has accomplished in her four years there. I am not in a position to donate the amounts I wish I could, but I donate what little I can in gratitude for a fine educational institution.
