Pick Up an Early Holiday Treat: Win Tickets to See Aquaman Tonight
Our latest trivia contest may stump you
Given Aquaman’s enormous popularity, it’s a wonder that the comic book superhero hasn’t had a film devoted to him…until now, that is.
December 21 marks the US release of Aquaman, the sixth installment of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Directed by James Wan and starring Jason Momoa in the title role, the movie is one of the most high-profile releases of the season and has already proven a box-office sensation overseas.
It debuted in China two weeks ago, and despite being released in only one country, it grossed over $100 million in just four days, making it the highest-earning film of the weekend worldwide. It was the highest-ever opening for a DCEU film in China. In the United States, the film is expected to pull in as much as $65 million this weekend alone.
The long-awaited film—it’s been in the planning stages at least since 2004—has an all-star cast: in addition to Momoa, of Game of Thrones fame, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, and Willem Dafoe have supporting roles.
The release kicks off a flurry of at least six DCEU movies scheduled to be released over the next two years, including a sequel to Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot, and a film with Oscar-nominee Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
