There are 6 comments on My Own Boston: Jake D’Ambra

  1. I’d like to meet him, too…at another Jazz “scene” in Boston (well, Cambridge) I’d describe as “Jazz beyond Jazz”, which respects the past like Dexter and Charles yet recognizes the advances and exploration newer generations have established which the mainstream should catch up to…

  2. This was a good article, very interesting, we need more like it instead of the usual leftist liberal political BS that BU today pushes out all the time.

  3. Sommerville lost Johnny D’s and RYLES in Cambridge is slated to close soon. Boston no longer offers jazz in “The Alley” on Tremont Street. In Boston, you have Wally’s (more students perform there than professionals, now) Darryl’s Corner Bar and Kitchen, and SLADES with a down home menu of Whiting, okra, black eye peas, incredible chicken wings, etc. The Famed vocal Jam is every Tuesday night. Then there’s the Beehive in the South End. The lack of interest of our younger generation is prompting the closing of the jazz institutions. Go, have a drink, have some chicken, but support these clubs.

  4. Jake’s a beast! Great job man.

I want to just mention a few more good jams around Boston, if you’re interested:
Lilypad jazz jam every other Sunday night: https://www.facebook.com/LilypadJazzJam/
    – This is a great one, led by tenor player David Artega. Killer house band every night, and a medly of talent from all around boston. Come here for a chill, low-pressure jam.

    Devlin’s Wednesday night jams: https://www.facebook.com/DevlinsBrighton/
    – Led by guitarist Christopher Brown, great house band every night. Not as many people come to this one, leading to a more tight jam where you’ll probably get to play a lot. A bit more challenging than the Lilypad jams on average.

Then of course, you can check out Wally’s. You really never know what you’ll get there, some days you get kicked in the butt by crazy tempos and standards you’ve never heard of, other days you’ll be amazed at how comfortable you feel there. After a while though, Wally’s can start to feel like home.

Lmk if there are any other jams I missed! And I hope Jake keeps on keeping on with his music, can’t wait for many more years of D’Ambra jazz.
