YouSpeak: Trump’s Executive Order on Immigration
Students express concerns over adminstration’s ban
Last Friday, with the stroke of a pen, President Donald Trump redefined—at least temporarily—US immigration policy. He signed an executive order that bars all refugees from entering the country for 120 days, bars refugees from war-torn Syria from entering indefinitely, and prohibits entry into the country of residents of Iraq, Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen for 90 days.
The Trump administration justified the order by saying that it was necessary to protect the country from terrorism, but the sweeping ban prompted swift and vociferous criticism from human rights, education, and immigration experts nationwide, and led to demonstrations across the country, including one in Copley Square Sunday that drew an estimated 20,000 people.
This week’s “YouSpeak” asks: “Will Trump’s actions on immigration make America safer?”
