Rich Barlow is a senior writer at BU Today and Bostonia magazine. Perhaps the only native of Trenton, N.J., who will volunteer his birthplace without police interrogation, he graduated from Dartmouth College, spent 20 years as a small-town newspaper reporter, and is a former Boston Globe religion columnist, book reviewer, and occasional op-ed contributor. There are 3 comments on Whither Newspapers (Or Should That Be Withered)?

  1. Hmmm …. The Globe itself is in the news with two major recent stories. First, the film “Spotlight” shows journalists performing their jobs exactly as they should, with diligent, fearless investigation & reporting. Second, the delivery debacle which jeopardizes subscription numbers & thus revenue. What are the lessons to be learned? Perhaps that the media performs such a valuable role that profit maximization should not be the main, let alone only, consideration. Second, the business model is inappropriate for some institutions — obviously higher ed, but journalism, public education, healthcare & politics too. Time to wake up to what’s happening, folks.

  2. Considering the effort and time that anyone in financial services spends prior to any conversion of data or systems or procedures, all it would have required for the Globe would have been to review a simulation of the route optimization model that should have been constructed based on Linear Programming. Such a review would have immediately tested and shown lacking the apparent assumptions that ACI made and that the Globe management swallowed whole! If we could do it for Konica Film Processing otherwise known as Fotomat, and similar comparable delivery tasks, a model could have been constructed and, as a result, all this grief prevented.

By the way, the foolishness of management personnel at Boston Globe is effecting other publications – such as the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) which “tags-along” on delivery with the Globe.
