BU Today Sessions: Jean-Luc

Electro vocalist flexes pipes over provocative beats

Jean-Luc Lukunku’s music combines elements of electro pop, R&B, dance, and hip hop. His lyrics are often provocative and sexual. Known professionally as Jean-Luc, the New York City–based singer, songwriter, and rapper first started writing lyrics in middle school.

During sophomore year at BU, Lukunku (COM’16) connected with electronic music producer Jared Brill (COM’18), and the two began working together, Brill providing the beats and Lukunku the lyrics. For live performances such as those above, recorded in Allston, the two are joined by Lukunku’s cousin, Adam King, a guitarist whose music provides an analog touch to their highly produced sound.

Advertising major Lukunku has fully embraced the visual medium of music videos to promote his music, and he says that he’s “using the music videos to shape me, not only as an artist, but as a brand that encompasses music, film, and fashion.”

Lukunku plans to release his debut album, 4AM in China, later this year. “Eyes,” the project’s first single and music video, will premiere on April 3. He hopes to one day become an entertainment mogul like Kanye West. “I want to push and push and perform as much as I can.”
