Matilda the Musical at Boston Opera House
Broadway blockbuster based on Roald Dahl novel comes to town
In one of the most anticipated events of the summer for Boston theater fans, the national touring production of the Broadway hit Matilda the Musical opens a 12-day run today at the Boston Opera House.
Based on the popular 1988 novel by Roald Dahl, with original music and lyrics by comedian Tim Minchin and book by Tony Award winner Dennis Kelly, the musical is about a brilliant and precocious five-year-old who uses the power of her vivid imagination to create a better life for herself. Matilda Wormwood outmaneuvers her cruel, neglectful parents and her villainous school principal, Miss Trunchbull, in her journey to happiness.
The cast includes Jennifer Blood (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder) as Miss Honey, Bryce Ryness (First Date) as Miss Trunchbull, and Quinn Mattfeld (Pal Joey) and Cassie Silva as Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood. The title role is performed by three girls, Gabby Gutierrez, Mia Sinclair Jenness, and Mabel Tyler, in rotation, following the Broadway production.
Matilda the Musical was first produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and was a huge hit in London before coming to Broadway in 2013, where it won four Tony Awards. Time magazine called it “the best musical since The Lion King.” Ben Brantley’s New York Times review hailed it as “the most satisfying and subversive musical ever to come out of Britain.”
The national tour kicked off in Los Angeles in May and is scheduled to travel around the country through next summer.
Matilda the Musical opens today, Tuesday, June 14, at 7:30 p.m. and runs through Sunday, June 26, at the Boston Opera House, 539 Washington St., Boston. Tickets range from $40 to $175 and can be purchased online here or by calling the ticket office at 866-523-7469. The show is 2 hours and 40 minutes long, with a 15-minute intermission, and is recommended for children ages six and older. Take an MBTA Green Line trolley to Boylston Street.
