Move-in 2016: What You Need to Know

Details on street closures, parking restrictions

Good news about this year’s Move-in: the Red Sox are out of town over Labor Day weekend, which should make navigating Kenmore Square considerably less painful.

Several BU offices, among them Housing, Dining, Parking & Transportation Services, Orientation, and the BU Police Department, have spent much of the summer planning and strategizing to make Move-in 2016 as easy as possible for students and their families.

This year, the University will house an estimated 11,496 students, up slightly from last year and the third largest number in history, says Marc Robillard, executive director for auxiliary services. (The record, set in 2010, is 11,558 students.)

Move-in began Monday, August 29, when the campus welcomed the estimated 750 freshmen and transfer students participating in this year’s First-Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP), a Community Service Center program that brings new students to campus a week early to perform community service at sites across the Boston area. Others who arrived Monday were orientation leaders and athletes gearing up for the fall season, as well as continuing students moving out of campus summer housing and into fall quarters.

No move-in was scheduled for Tuesday, August 30, but Wednesday, August 31, was expected to be the single busiest day of the week, with 2,300 students moving in, including approved freshman and transfer students arriving for the first day of the final freshman Orientation session, along with upperclassman whose off-campus summer leases expired at the end of August.

An estimated 1,000 students were expected to show up Thursday, September 1, and also Friday, September 2, but Saturday, September 3, when the majority of freshmen are scheduled to move in, is projected to be very busy. The official move-in hours for new students are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 3, and 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, September 4. Continuing students can move in on Sunday, September 4, from noon to 5:30 p.m., and Monday, September 5, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, September 3, and Sunday, September 4, resident assistants will be on hand to check students in and parking lot attendants will help direct traffic, while Scarlet Squad members (upperclassmen in red shirts) will be on hand to help freshmen and their families unload.

BU’s newest residence hall, at 1047 Commonwealth Avenue, opened Wednesday. Students moving in there this week will have metered spaces available in front of the building blocked off for unloading. After unloading, students and families should immediately move their vehicles to the Langsam Garage; the garage entrance is on Gardner Street. No parking is allowed in the alley next to the building.

A special Move-in weekend shuttle bus will run up and down Commonwealth Avenue on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., stopping at 13 locations between Kenmore Square and Agganis Arena. This is in addition to the regular BU Shuttle (BUS), which travels between the Charles River Campus and the Medical Campus.

This year’s Matriculation ceremony—the official welcoming event for the 3,566 members of the Class of 2020—is at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 4, at Agganis Arena, preceded by a procession up Commonwealth Avenue by members of the freshman class. The procession begins at 12:50 p.m. at Kilachand Hall, 91 Bay State Road. Freshmen residing on West Campus start their walk from West Campus Plaza at 1:15 p.m. and join with the rest of the procession at Buick Street. (Street closings during the procession are noted below.)

During Move-in week, the BU Police will reroute traffic at specific spots across campus, and officers will be on hand to direct drivers during the following changes:

Bay State Road (Beacon Street to Granby Street)

From Wednesday, August 31, through Monday, September 5, Bay State Road will be closed to through traffic from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Only residents, delivery trucks, and students moving in to BU will be allowed access.

700 Commonwealth Avenue (Warren Towers)

To keep the bicycle lane open, no vehicles are allowed to unload in front of Warren Towers. Access will be through the Warren Towers garage only, which is accessible off of Hinsdale Street. There will be limited parking for faculty and staff parking permit holders from Monday, August 29, through Sunday, September 4.

Commonwealth Avenue (West Campus)

Parking spaces on Commonwealth Avenue between Buick Street and Harry Agganis Way may be unavailable through Thursday, September 1, due to an ongoing Boston Water and Sewer Commission project.

South Campus

From Wednesday, August 31, through Monday, September 5, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Buswell Street will be converted to one-way, going west from Park Drive to St. Mary’s Street, and going east from Park Drive to Mountfort Street.

BU Bridge and University Road

On Sunday, September 4, the BU Bridge and University Road will be closed for a period of time between 1 and 2 p.m. to accommodate the thousands of freshmen proceeding from East Campus to Agganis Arena for Matriculation.

Harry Agganis Way and Buick Street

From Saturday, September 3, through Monday, September 5, Student Village residents moving into 33 Harry Agganis Way or 10 Buick Street will be directed to park in the Agganis Arena garage.

On Sunday, September 4, Harry Agganis Way and Buick Street will be closed from 1 to 3:30 p.m. for Matriculation. There will be no vehicle access for students moving into 33 Harry Agganis Way and 10 Buick Street during that time.

The Agganis Arena C-2 lot (the lower outdoor service lot) will be closed to faculty and staff parking permit holders Monday, August 29, through Sunday, September 4.

Babcock Street

On Saturday, September 3, and Sunday, September 4, West Campus students moving into Claflin, Sleeper, and Rich Halls will be directed to park in the Langsam Garage and outer lot; the garage entrance is on Gardner Street. Students moving into 1019 Commonwealth Avenue can park in the garage or in metered spaces.

The Langsam Garage and outer lot will have limited spaces for faculty and staff parking permit holders from Monday, August 29, through Sunday, September 4; the garage entrance is on Gardner Street.

When are the move in times on the 31st for continuing students?

    • Art Jahnke, BU Today on 08.29.2016 at 7:46 am

Move in times for continuing students are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Wednesday (8/31), Thursday (9/1) and Friday (9/2).

  • Linda on 08.29.2016 at 8:20 am

A question about FYSOP move-in today. Is there a height restriction for vehicles entering the garage for Warren Towers? If there is, where should SUVs park? Thank you.

    • Kay on 08.29.2016 at 8:59 am

Hi! I’m a sophomore, and I believe the height requirement is 6’0″. My dad has an SUV and we’ve never had a problem.

    • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 9:11 am

Thanks for your question. Vehicle height can not exceed 6 feet 2 inches. Taller vehicles will be directed to parking on Cummington Mall.

  • MT on 08.29.2016 at 8:38 am

What do students need to show police to gain entrance to Bay State Road on moving days? Thank you.

    • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 9:06 am

The police will take your word that you are a student moving in. They can usually tell by the car full of belongings! A friendly smile is always appreciated by the BU and Boston police and the Scarlett Squad.

  • Karen on 08.29.2016 at 8:46 am

What’s the best way to unload for FYSOP students moving in today, residing in Claflin Hall?

    • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 9:02 am

FYSOP students arriving at West Campus (Claflin, Sleeper and Rich Halls) should proceed directly to Babcock St. BU Police will direct them to unloading areas and the parking garage.

  • Meryl on 08.29.2016 at 8:47 am

Are the freshman assigned a particular time slot for their move in or do we just show up anytime from 9-5:30 on 9/3?

    • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 8:59 am

Good question! Students are NOT assigned times. They may show-up and check-in anytime between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

  • Beverly on 08.29.2016 at 8:48 am

Planning on moving my sophmore son in on Thurs Sept 1st. There is some stuff coming from storage between 3:00 & 5:00. So the dorm will be closed at 4:00 ?

    • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 8:57 am

Thank you for your question. Check-in ends at 4 p.m. but the building is open. Your son will need to meet the storage company at the front door.

  • MT on 08.29.2016 at 9:20 am

What time can students for FYSOP beginning in today?

Also, from the pics of the garage entrance, it doesn’t look like a small SUV with an overhead car carrier will fit in the garage. Is there an alternate place to park like Hindsdale or Cummington streets to unload?

    • Joel Brown on 08.29.2016 at 9:39 am

The height restriction is 6 feet 2 inches. Taller vehicles will be directed to Cummington Mall by the police and /or parking attendant.

      • Clinton Weaver on 08.30.2016 at 6:30 am

We are moving in on west campus on Saturday with a similar oversized small SUV with rooftop carrier, which is too tall for a parking garage… Where will we park and unload?

        • Marc on 08.30.2016 at 10:01 am

          Hi Clinton,

There is plenty of room in the West Campus area for oversized vehicles. The Police and the Parking staff will direct you once you arrive on Babcock Street.

    Hi,
We are planning on moving our son, an incoming freshman, to campus on Friday the 2nd. He will be living at Sleeper. I realize that Friday of a holiday weekend will be busy no matter what but wondered if there was a preferable time to arrive on campus to avoid extreme traffic.
    Thanks!

    • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 9:44 am

Thank you for your question. You are welcome to check-in from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.on Friday. There is no preferred time.

Having moved on to campus 3 times before, the earlier in the morning you go, the better. Any time after 11 will be worse than earlier in the day. I usually leave my house around 8:30 to get to BU at 9:30 and do alright

  • Ryan on 08.29.2016 at 9:28 am

Hi, What time does FYSOP move-in begin today at Warren Towers? Will the students pick up keys at Warren, or do they get them when they register at GSU for FYSOP?
    Thanks!

    • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 9:55 am

      Hi Nancy,

FYSOP move in “officially” begins at 4 p.m. Students assigned to Warren Towers will pick-up their keys at Warren Towers.

      All the best!

      Executive Director of Auxiliary Services

      • Nancy on 08.29.2016 at 10:13 am

Thanks Marc! You are having a busy morning. Will there be those wheeled bins available at Warren? And does move in “unofficially” begin any earlier than 4? (just wondering about the ” ” )

        • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 12:52 pm

Yes there are carts available at Warren. The yellow moving cart is our opening of school mascot.
The Warren Towers staff has the discretion to start checking in FYSOP students earlier than 4 p.m. if the rooms are ready.

We should also acknowledge the important role that our teams at Facilities Management & Planning (FMP) and Residence Life play in preparing for and welcoming our resident students. Student rooms, suites, and apartments are being cleaned by FMP so they’re ready for occupancy; no small feat. Residence Life staff personally greet and welcome each resident student upon arrival. The collaboration among BU Housing, Facilities Management & Planning, and Residence Life began months ago to ensure we have a successful Move-in 2016. We in ResLife look forward to an excellent week ahead.

    • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 11:45 am

Yes you can check in at 9 a.m. at 10 Buick Street on Sunday. Buick Street will be closed on Sunday from approximately 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. for the Matriculation Walk.

If taking an Uber onto campus to unload the usual pile o’ stuff on 8/29 at Warren, will that vehicle be permitted to go into the garage off Hinsdale? Like everyone else, I am trying to find the closest permissible access for ease of unloading.

    • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 11:47 am

I am a continuing student moving into south campus on Sunday Sept. 4. My flight arrives early in the morning , how will I be able to move in if the time begins at noon? My family won’t be with me and I have boxes arriving curbside before noon as well. I made these arrangements months ago before I realized the 9am check ins were only for freshman. I would love to know if there is anyway for me to check in earlier I don’t want to be stranded in front of my dorm for hours.

    • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 11:53 am

    • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 11:51 am

Is there any handicap parking by the Towers? My wife just had a knee replacement.

    • Marc on 08.29.2016 at 12:20 pm

Good question. There are no handicap parking spaces in front of 140 Bay State Road. After unloading your vehicle in front of the building, I recommend parking in either the Harari Building lot at 595 Commonwealth Avenue (directly behind The Towers)or the CAS Lot located at the west end of Bay State Road. The area around the Towers and Bay State Road is flat and there are no stairs to navigate

  • Kyle Bradford on 08.29.2016 at 4:46 pm

Hey there. My girlfriend and I are moving tommorow (Aug 30) from Fenway near the baseball park to Davis Square and Brookline respectfully. What’s the best way to get through to somerville while avoiding traffic? We are moving in the morning. Are there any roads that we should outright avoid? We aren’t affiliated with BU. But we live so close at we should we should ask.

Lastly. Where can we pick up boxes for free?

    • Kat on 08.29.2016 at 5:17 pm

      Hi Kyle –

There is no official BU move-in on August 30th (it is the only day this week that students cannot move in) so you are in luck. Besides the usual Boston traffic woes, you should be fine to get over to Somerville. Best of luck!

    • Timothy Dunn on 08.29.2016 at 5:17 pm

      Kyle,

Tomorrow should be a lighter day traffic wise around campus as no Move-In activities are scheduled. If you are moving between 11am and 3pm you should avoid rush hour traffic as well as any increased traffic due to the game at Fenway.

      Good luck with the move.

I’m moving into 10 Buick Street Student Village 1 on Wednesday, where should we park to unload my stuff?

    • Marc Robillard on 08.29.2016 at 5:09 pm

Go directly to the parking lot behind 10 Buick St.

      Hi Kevin,

Please unload and park at either the Agganis Arena Garage (Lot A) or the Agganis Arena Surface Lot (Lot C-2). Both of these facilities are accessible from Commonwealth Avenue by turning right off of Commonwealth Avenue on to Buick Street if you are travelling westbound or by turning left on to Harry Agganis Way off of Commonwealth Avenue if you are travelling eastbound.

Hey Thanks for all the answers!! I am not planning on arriving with my daughter’s stuff [she’s at FYSOP] until later on Saturday. Maybe 4:00ish. She’s in the Towers. Is there always parking available nearby, even that late, or does it fill up?

    • Timothy Dunn on 08.29.2016 at 6:03 pm

      Hi Chris,

After unloading in front of the Towers you may proceed down to Bay State Road to the CAS Lot (Lot J). This open air lot, located just after the Castle and across from the Admissions Reception Center, will have more than enough capacity when you arrive.

Are parents welcome to the Matriculation Ceremony?

  • Vladimir Grinshpun on 08.29.2016 at 7:42 pm

Hello. I will be traveling to Boston with my freshman son on Friday September 2nd, and then move him into the Kilachand Hall on Saturday.

We have off-campus accommodations on Friday in the vicinity of Langsam Garage. Will I be able to charge my electric vehicle overnight in the Langsam Garage (Friday)?

Which parking lot can I use on Saturday after unloading at the Kilachand Hall?

    Thank you

    • Timothy Dunn on 08.30.2016 at 9:16 am

      Good Morning Vladimir,

      Happy to help.

Parking & Transportation Services utilizes ChargePoint to access the EV stations on campus therefore please bring your ChargePoint card with you if you have one. Unfortunately, the only method of payment for the EV stations on campus is the ChargePoint card. The cost of charging your vehicle will be $0.25 per hour. If your vehicle remains charging longer than 4 hours, the cost of charging will increase to $0.50 per hour thereafter.

After unloading at Kilachand on Saturday, please proceed to the Hariri Garage, 595 Commonwealth Avenue or the CAS Lot, 240 Bay State Road. Both facilities are a short distance from Kilachand.

Hi, my daughter is living in a Whitestone on Commonwealth (right near Warren). Where would you recommend parking?
    Thanks!

    • Timothy Dunn on 08.30.2016 at 9:24 am

      Good Morning,

In order to keep vehicles from parking in the bicycle lane on Commonwealth Avenue, please park in the 730/750 Commonwealth Avenue Lot or the 766 Commonwealth Avenue Lot. Both parking facilities are a short distance, about a half block, from your daughter’s residence.

    Hi,
I’m an incoming freshman, I was wondering what the logistics are for parents coming to matriculation. Do they come to Agannis Arena at 11:30?

    Thanks:)

    • Kat Cornetta on 08.30.2016 at 8:51 am

Parents should arrive at the arena around 1:30pm or so. The ceremony begins at 2pm. Students will walk to Matriculation together – depending on where you live, you will either begin walking at 12:50pm, 1pm or 1:15pm.

We are moving our son into Warren Towers on 9/2. What time slots is the dorm open that day for moving in? Where does he get his keys? We have a Volvo small SUV and will have an overhead Thule rack on it to fit Zach’s stuff. If it doesn’t fit in the garage, how far is Cummington Mall from the dorm? Will there be people to help us? Will there be moving carts that we can use? Thank you.

    • Marc on 08.30.2016 at 7:52 am

Thanks for your questions. On Friday September 2 check-in will be from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Zach can pick up his room key in the 4th floor multipurpose room. He will also get a moving cart there. The Cummington Mall is directly behind Warren Towers. Because Friday is early move-in the Scarlett Squad will not be available to help.

    • Marc on 08.30.2016 at 8:05 am

Good questions. You should make arrangements to meet your son at the Towers on Thursday evening. We do not allow parents to deliver student belongings to the room without the student present. As strange as it may seem this is now your son’s residence and you will be a guest.

    • Marc on 08.30.2016 at 8:00 am

Thanks for your questions. Since your son is already here you can meet him at anytime on Saturday. Saturday is a very busy day on campus thus later is better to avoid congestion in the area. For Sunday I suggest that you park in central campus, the Harari Building garage at 595 Commonwealth Avenue, and take the BU Shuttle Bus to the Agganis Arena.

My son is supposed to be moving into Sleeper hall on Saturday. I want to perform this ‘rite of passage’ with my son, but I have some mobility issues and a handicapped parking placard for my car. What is the best thing for us to do so that walking/standing at least for me, is limited? Would moving him in Friday be better?

    • Marc Robillard on 08.31.2016 at 10:05 am

      Hi Valerie,

You are welcome to arrive on Friday. The Scarlett Squad will not be working on Friday so your son will have to do all if the work. Saturday will be busy but there are more people around to help. If your son does not bring everything he owns in the world Friday may be the better option for you.
